To anyone who has had a mean roo

That must have been scary when the roo attacked a roo in your arms

There are two kinds of trauma from chickens to humans:flogging and pecking. Pecking is their way of saying feed me or I need attention. Flogging is digging their spurs in you, ripping you apart because you have invaded their space or bothered their hens and you will die if you do not run fast enough.:eek: I was attacked by a RIR a long time ago and NEVER bothered with that breed again. I honestly think it just depends on each one's personality. Believe me when you have it happen to you you will know!!! Those little banty roosters are very protective of their girls too !!We had a Jap bantam named Romeo and it was like boot camp at feeding time. You had to scour the landscape for him and see where he was, then run as fast as you could to dump the feed and get out. That little sucker was like lightning! He was such a good daddy and protector we kept him until he passed at the age of 7. I trimmed his spurs but dang it still hurt sometimes!!

I had a Cuckoo Maran roo that turned mean at 4 months of age. I had to use a broom for protection whenever I entered the coop or yard, but he didn't bother my DH, until one day he landed on my DH back when he went to gather eggs and DH sent him sailing across the coop with his boot. I was willing to tolerate the roos behavior until he savagely attacked one of three 12 week old pullets (he was daddy to all three) that I was introducing to the flock. When DH went in to rescue her the roo attacked him the same way. DH grabbed him and threw him out into the field behind our property hoping that the coyotes would find him. Two days later he found his way back to the coop and tried to get into the yard with the girls. Even with my pitbull, I was afraid to go down to the coop with him on the loose, so my DH shot him...on Thanksgiving Day. And no, we didn't have him for dinner.

We brooded our chicks in the bathroom. They were all supposed to be pullets, but there were a couple of cockerels in the mix. One was an EE and one was a minorca. The EE boy was sweet and never a problem. The minorca was one of the friendliest chicks. My DD claimed him as her own and named him Sweetie, thinking he was a girl.

He grew up, though, and got to be very mean by about 6 months old. Our chickens free ranged during the days, and every time my 2yo niece went outside, the black cockerel came running for her and knocked her down. He jumped on my 12yo son's back, spurring and biting. He bit me out of the blue. When my DH finally saw the dumb boy in action, he went to rooster heaven. He was mean mean mean!!!

I raise my roosters with discipline(sounds silly but true) and respect for the "flock master"-me-from thetime they are young. I have been keeping Australorp , Plymouth Rock(Barred, Buff, White), EE, and Silver Laced Wyandotte roos, and I'm currently raising Sebright and Japanese roos in with my Bantam mix. I have not yet been attacked by a roo save for once when I was a child.

It was my beloved EE roo called Doodle. He jumped off a roost and flew at my head one day, and I just grabbed him out of mid-air, flipped him over on his back, and held him like that infront of all of his hens. His face turned soooooo red, but he got over it and never attacked me again. That was when I was 10.

The worst thing I have gotten since then has been a few bites from my current beloved EE roo, Sparrow. He went through a wierd phase where he would bite the back of my hand and keep pinching me as he gave me a mean look right in the face!

It was annoying, so when he would bite me,I would act like a bigger roo and grab ahold of some of his long feathers on the back of his neck. I never pulled or anything, but he would squeal out of surprise and let go immediately. He in now a very respectful, affectionate fellow!

We have a 5 month old white leghorn named Hembry that does not like kids and he will chase and flog the kids if they are not beside us when they are in the run. He knows better to do it to us but will get the kids every chance he gets. My 5 year old son always asks when he is gonna be supper.

I have a beautiful Black Sex Link roo. He can be a terror! I have to keep reminding him who is the head honcho around here by "getting bigger" than he is and sounding mean when I ask him if he would now like to try that again. When he gets out of hand he spends time in a dog crate in the coop. Holding him and petting him doesn't work anymore for this guy.

If he weren't so beautiful he would go. He spends his days out in the run so if my DDs want to go collect eggs or feed the chickens they just open the coop door and reach in to shut the chicken door so they are locked out in the run so saftey with them is not a factor or he would be gone.
