I raise my roosters with discipline(sounds silly but true) and respect for the "flock master"-me-from thetime they are young. I have been keeping Australorp , Plymouth Rock(Barred, Buff, White), EE, and Silver Laced Wyandotte roos, and I'm currently raising Sebright and Japanese roos in with my Bantam mix. I have not yet been attacked by a roo save for once when I was a child.
It was my beloved EE roo called Doodle. He jumped off a roost and flew at my head one day, and I just grabbed him out of mid-air, flipped him over on his back, and held him like that infront of all of his hens. His face turned soooooo red, but he got over it and never attacked me again. That was when I was 10.
The worst thing I have gotten since then has been a few bites from my current beloved EE roo, Sparrow. He went through a wierd phase where he would bite the back of my hand and keep pinching me as he gave me a mean look right in the face!
It was annoying, so when he would bite me,I would act like a bigger roo and grab ahold of some of his long feathers on the back of his neck. I never pulled or anything, but he would squeal out of surprise and let go immediately. He in now a very respectful, affectionate fellow!
