Tolbunt Polish

I have raised poultry for 50 years most of which were show birds. I'm an APA / Aba judge so I'm more critical of birds than most but by anyone that knows Polish these are going backwards quickly.

I can't match your 50 years but have bred Polish for a little over 30. Historically, here in Australia, the interest in Polish has ebbed and flowed over the years. I take comfort from the fact that there has always been a few serious breeders to keep them going and maintain the standard

I am new to Polish and hungry for care and information to be not only a good owner but possibly breed in the future. I have a small flock of assorted birds and two Polish that I hatched from purchased fertile eggs. I have already found the attraction as they are as sweet as unique and beautiful. These are my first Polish at 10 weeks, the pictures are not the best. I welcome comments including possible sex.

I'm hatching out my first set of grandchicks, fertility is great. They should be hatching on January 14 and I just set another batch yesterday!

The second picture may be a male.

Update at 5wks. I have 10 more in the incubator crossing fingers and hoping to get a nice colored frizzle Tolbunt or more.
They look gorgeous
Its very tempting, but you will pay dearly for the mistake in upfront price for the eggs and then on the back side with a bad hatch or chicks you have to cull due to genetic issues. If it sounds like I'm, speaking from personal experience, I am. Breeders who show and or are certified are folks who go the extra to make sure their flock is healthy, fed well and are cared for, all of that means better off spring obviously.
I loved the polish. I end up paying a lot of money for them. But they are just so worth it. Yet I have lots of questions. Unfortunately I ended up with 4 wc roo and two wc hens. Three of the roo are still juvenile. The thing is that the two that are frizzel are becoming bold. I think that the older rooster is probably pecking on them. Help I don't want to think of the worst.
Most of the Tolbunts now have very poor Polish type and very poor color. The problem seems to be that profit seems to override quality. Adding all these other colors will ultimately ruin the breed. Walt
Mine are just gorgeous. The adults were in shows and the rest are their babies. I was wondering if I could mix them to get colorful ones. But my breeder said that then they would be mutt. So got lost there.

I ended up loosing the one with mostly white in the head feathers to the cold. The other which to me looked smaller and less hardy made it through just fine. If it was a matter of genetics I guess natural selection showed me which was stronger for any kind of breeding program. I am picking up 3 frizzled bunt chicks at the Newnan Georgia poultry show from a well known breeder on Valentines weekend…very excited. As spring and new options become available I have different breeders line up so that my base will not be too closely related (sister-brother etc).

Walt, what do you think of my Tolbunts? I truly welcome your experienced opinion. My goal is to breed the best birds I can. I want them to be Polish first, then Tolbunt.

I'm not raising them for profit. I'm raising them because I've a lifelong love of poultry and now that I'm retired I can devote lots of time to breeding the best.

Their leg color needs to be darker. It is light slate. I would like to increase their crest size. I would also like to remove some white from the cockerel's wings and tail.

In your opinion, Walt, can I improve these areas by selective breeding my own stock?

All of my birds have straight toes, and the proper tail angle. Sometimes they drop or raise their tails when the camera comes out though!
