Tolbunt Polish

Pics
I love my Polish and would really like to start breeding Tolbunt's. What do I need to get started? My hens are currently GL, SL, WC Blue, WC Black, Buff Laced and 1 blue spash/GL mix. My rooster is a blue splash, so I know I'll need another roo.

Does anyone know where Tolbunt's can be purchased? Online?

Thanks!

Got my hatching eggs from Lucinda at Greenacres Poultry Farm. They are very expensive and very hard to hatch. Took me two orders and I got 4 chicks. So be prepared when you start looking. If you can find grown birds beware of crooked toes. I have a roo and 2 hens. Hopefully by spring I will have hatching eggs for sale. My hens are laying, but my roo is a little younger and not sure if they are breeding yet. You can save my name and contact me later is you are still interested.

Just as sutillman said. Green Acres is the only breeder who actually regularly sells hatching eggs, however your luck of having a female is VERY low, and a pair even less.

Even having more than 1-2 birds from a dozen or more eggs is low. I bought a dozen eggs, and only got two males out of it. (Sadly had 6 fertile, and 4 in lockdown, but only 2 made it)

A good recommendation is to not breed "hatch mates," pairs from the same hatching, as all you're doing is furthering the inbred issues. The best thing to do is work with Gold Laced x Tolbunt.

Oh and for news' sake, here's my Tolbunts now that they've grown up a little more.

My frizzled cockerel, "Spike." I like him more than my smooth, because he has literally NO comb, hardly any wattles at all, a better tail, and of course frizzling. He also has a better temperament.

My smooth cockerel, "Bowie." He's got really good coloring (except in his tail and wings) and really good muffs/beard, pretty good body too except for his high set tail, but he has a smaller crest than I'd like. Hopefully my girls will improve that.

If you are serious about raising them, contact Illia on here, she's got a few and is very involved with them. She can link you to the threads and tell you who else to cantact.

I've been picking her brain too, but I'm "sceered" to pester her anymore.

afraid if I don't quit asking dumb questions she won't sell me any next spring.

edited to add; Never mind, by the time I finished typeing she'd found this thread on her own.

Psshh. . . You people.

I have so many people who tell me they're worried they ask and pester too much. I love talking chicken, so really, pester away.

Here's some "goofy" shots of Spike. He has the funkiest crow I've EVER heard, too. But, yes, I'm really into this and want to breed to a Tolbunt that is actually show-able. (good body most of all, then good color. Got the color mostly down, except the tail smudging, but the body needs to be SOP perfect.

Oh and another thing - Spike may be my pick man, but he has more white in the crest than Bowie. Not a good thing. Another reason I'm keeping both.

And, here's Bowie in a more "body" type shot.

Any critics, weigh in! Personally I think he needs more chest, certainly more crest, and there's something about his tail. . . Perhaps it is the angle or the abrupt base. And of course, the color needs to level out to more solid borders, not white/brown/black smudging.

Yea, I've been breeding mine to my GL roo and hatched one chick I call Uno since he was the only one that hatched. Illia, do you think since my tolbunt roo and my hens are from two different hatches it will be ok to breed them to each other? They all came from Lucinda, but have no way of knowing if they are from the same parents.

Lucinda only has one cock, a few frizzled, and some smooth hens. I wouldn't think of it being a safe thing. It's good for back-up, in case the gold laced project goes under, but otherwise, no, it's still from the same parents.

Do you have pics of your Gold Laced hens? Always love seeing them, and I'm really on the hunt for them. . . If I EVER find any, they're sold before I contact the person, I never find hatching eggs (except terrible hatchery quality ones or a breeder with ONE good hen and a bunch of squirrel tailed skinny girls) and, so, I've got some Silver Laced. . . . Which is good for sex-linked offspring.

So YOU'RE the one with the "only one good hen" - Were you selling GL Polish eggs a few months ago by any chance? Your pen and your hens look identical to the seller's.

The hen in the back is quite nice, however the one in front has a horrible squirrel tail and thin body, sorry. I asked the seller if they could possibly only collect eggs from that one nice girl in the background, and they said no - They can't tell who's is who.

If I were you, I'd get your cute little cockerel and pair him up with the girl in the background. . Very nice pairing.
