Too Early for Feb Hatch-A-Long Thread??

You know what finally started saving me from this is that I like to keep a closed system at my house so that I know the chicks I'm selling haven't come in contact with anything else, within my control. It's a great excuse to myself to not bring chicks in from outside...it's also a great reason to hatch more myself. :lau
I go to chicken swaps that are local and I have not had any issues with any type of disease coming in my flock. I really like hatching my own chicks just because I like to see the coloring that I can get. Getting chicks from the store never works out usually for me because they'll say they are all pullets and I end up with a bunch of cockerels 🙄

When I first got started with chickens I got a couple Buff Orpingtons at the feed store...they grew up to be two very sweet White Leghorns. :lau But hey, at least they were pullets! lol

I'm going to try to stay out of the feed store when they have chicks 😂 I know that I will bring some home if I go in there

The worst thing is when I walk in and they're all 50 cents. :eek:This happened last weekend and it took a tremendous amount of willpower to walk out of there without at least some baby ducklings... bought my birds some treats to make me feel like I wasn't leaving empty handed.

That's how I got my ducklings. They charged me only $1 per duckling so we ended up getting three of them. I don't know how this happened but we ended up with two hens and a Drake. Worked out perfectly somehow!

She has Lavender and Blue Orpingtons! I'm not sure how the genetics of the those colors work but either is a possibility.
Don't ask me anything about genetics because I don't know how it works either.

When I crossed my Delaware chicken with my black Jersey Giant... Everyone said that the chicks would be straight black and that's from people who know genetics... Somehow I ended up with chicks that are white with gray legs and black spots 😂 they are probably the best looking chickens that I have, but genetics always amaze me

I always hear how wonderful Orpingtons are but that was not the case for me. I had a buff orpington who was so mean to me and all the other chickens I gave her away to the farm up the street. She was a good layer and she was pretty but she is the only chicken I ever got rid of. Maybe I just got the one bad one who knows.
There are always bad apples, but I think that's just the luck of the draw.

I had a cream legbar that was the most evil chicken I have ever owned in my life. I re-homed her to a farm and now she takes care of their chicks.

My first chickens last fall were three barred rocks and three buff orps from the local rural king. I lucked out big time because they're all big babies that just want to be held and loved on between getting treats, really were all girls, and started laying between 4 and 5 months. Beginners luck?

My bielefelders that I hatched myself that everyone said were the perfect most docile chicken ever are feisty through and through. One cockerel was even trying to cull all the other ladies besides his one and only, the lavender orpington. I was thrilled about them, but have decided not to add any more to the flock. 🤷‍♀️
