Totally confused about Ivomec and how to use!!

I wasn't sure what to do either as this was the first time for me to worm and I did it as a prevention - not becuase I saw worms...
I found this site:

http://www.sweeth2o.us/health.html

I used the exact same method for three days... that is 4cc per gallon of the 1% injectable (I had some already for the dogs) and all my chickens are still alive and I haven't seen any worms.
I never saw any to start with though so that proably wasn't helpful to know!

I was scared of using it because when I worked at a vet. clinic and we were drilled about NEVER o'ding a dog on ivermectin. But all the chickens are ok after this and they are bantams.

Good luck!

Great Link! Thanks for posting. I was confused on the exact same thing that you were. I saw the bottle of the injectable Ivermectin but was not able to find any posts where people specifically said that they used a syringe to withdraw the liquid from the bottle and mixed it in their chicken's drinking water and that is what I was needing to find and confirm. I didn't want to do it and kill my entire flock. Now that I am reading where people have actually used this method successfully and also links that indicate such, I feel more comfortable doing this myself. I'm glad that we are all brain storming here and sharing information and links that we all can use to benefit our animals.

This is great!

I just got done using ivomec on my chickens for lice and mites. I've been told it only kills certain lice and mites, but this is the second season of using it and it always works like a charm. Dusting never works for me so I've given up on it. I have never had worms, but I'm sure it's because I use Ivomec. I use the 1% injectable for cattle in their water (spendy at $50 a bottle) - 4cc per gallon of water for 2 days, make a fresh batch each day. It is the only water they get for those two days.

This is the thread on BYC that I found the information on last year.

https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=185989. It was from Glenda Heywood who I completely trust.

It is my understanding that chickens are not susceptible to the same complications with ivermectin that dogs are. Their brains work differently, so it isn't an issue.

I did draw it out in a 12 cc syringe because my waterer is 3 gallons... I put it in the waterer and then used the hose to fill it up and mix it well.
Everyone is still running around so I guess they are ok! I don't eat the eggs because I am saving them to hatch so I can't help you there!

Good luck!

Jmurcks, that is exactly what I needed to read. My waterers are also 3 gallons like yours, so your information has totally helped me to understand what I need to do. Thanks!

I eat the eggs while treating my chickens. My vet told me it's the same medicine (ivomectrin based) that humans get when they have worms so I figure I'm worming myself

I had one of my Hens die the day after using the Ivermectin. Everyone was healthy when I dosed them so I am relating it to the medicine.

All the other birds are fine though. Some people can have a reaction to certain medicines and Ivermectin is a medicine so please do use caution when eating the eggs after using this.

If you use Eprinex you don't have to throw the eggs away.

I was told not to hatch chicks of hens who have been treated with Ivermectin for two weeks as it may cause deformity.

Question-- I have dosed them all with Ivermectin. Do I have to do it again in two weeks?

As for worming--how long until I can eat the eggs after worming them with Wazine?

As far as the dosing again part, yes if using it for lice or mites. This insures that any eggs laid/hatched during that time period are killed. I don't know if the same applies to worming. I've never had to deal with worms.
