Toulouse Geese Thread

Just an update on my eggs! One hatched and another is pipped and chirping a lot! I dont remember what a day old Toulouse looks like but I can deffinately tell this is a mix! Its yellow with a light grey back with a yellow pouf on its head!! Its hatched last night in my hand after trying to hatch for over 48 hours! Poor thing is exhausted. Im completely in love and attached to this baby already. But ive noticed it doesnt want to eat or drink ive shown it how ive dipped its beak but it shakes it head and clacks its beak at me and wont touch the food. Plus it doesnt walk yet. Its legs kind of slide out sort of to the sides like its on slippery ground. It doesnt get around very well. Is that normal? Or will it get stronger with time since it took so long to hatch? I have it on about an inch of pine shaving bedding in a rubbermaid tub that i use as a brooder box for all my chicks. This is the first time ive hatched goslings so im not sure what the normal is for these little guys. Plus its not happy (constantly "cries" chirps peeps) until its held then it promtly snuggles in and falls asleep! Thanks for everything! I will try to get a picture posted if i can figure it out on the mobile phone.
Hi Tsumo. I´m just nosing on this thread, I don´t have toulouse, and by the sounds of it, nor do you...you have a tufted something, maybe a roman? But I found what you said about your gosling not walking yet a little worrying. They do take a good day to get on their feet, so that´s normal. But, they can also get what´s called splayed legs, so it´d be good for you to do some research on this just so you can rule it out. Get onto the 2014 gosling hatch thread to post a pic and see what folks think on there. And yes, Miss Lydia has a good point about a towel, it gives very good grip and you can wash it out easily. As regards it eating and drinking, as Miss Lydia says, it doesn´t need anything usually for the first 24 hours. However, yours took longer to hatch, and some goslings are ready to eat and drink very soon after hatching. What are you giving it? Try putting a little tiny bowl of water in, and float some short pieces of grass or lettuce in it. The baby will most likely start picking at it. Also, because goslings are so inquisitive, Personally, I don´t have them on shavings ever, because I worry they´ll try to eat them.
When´s the next one due to hatch?

I will try putting a towel in to see if that helps. The other hasnt hatched quite yet its close though! I dont mind being mama goose! When it gets really whiney sounding i put in the front pocket of my hoodie and carry it around that way for an hour or two and it usually calms down. I will definately look into the splay leg thing! I hope it doesnt have it!

I don´t think it´s a massive problem. Ruru had one just last week I think, so find one of her posts and ask her about it.

After looking up splay leg pictures i have come to the conclusion that my gosling is splay legged! Is this a death sentance? If i put it on my carpet it scoots around trying to follow me. So i think it will be able to get to food and water. Right now im using a medicine dropper to get water into it and that works wonders! It has perked up quite a bit! But continues to clack its beak at me. I cant figure out how to get pictures to upload. I think my phone is a piece! But i have named it Barnie!

It is not a death sentence I have sent RURU your post hopefully she'll be able to help you since she had a gosling hatch last week with it.

Hi Tsumo here is what you do. Take some horse tape that you wrap with that is sticky on one side and cut it long enough to wrap on the one leg and the go to the other leg and wrap around the other leg and put the sticky side together. You put the gosling on it's back in your lap, make sure to start with the wrap on one leg go around it not too tight but so it will stay on the goslings leg. Make sure to go right near the what I call the elbow before it goes up the leg. Like on your arm where your elbow is right below it before it goes up into the upper leg. Then go over to the other leg make sure the legs are pulled together some and not out too far then it does not work. But the gosling will be able to get up and walk. If you do not get it right the first time try again until the legs look secure and baby can get up and walk without the legs splaying out. Leave on for 24 to 48 hours and then take it off. That is all the time it takes to fix the legs. Good luck..
If you have a hard time knowing how far apart to put them just think how they stand and put them that far apart so the legs do not go from under the gosling.
If you look up spraddle legs they have picture photo's on how to tape...
