Toulouse Geese Thread

Ahh, Kevin (named for the "snipe" Kevin in the animated movie "UP!") just showed up on my property a couple of weeks ago. The day before, one of my neighbors asked across the fence if I had seen the peacock... Where? In her driveway, earlier. Nope. I have never wanted peacocks because of the blood-curdling screams....

The next evening, he was in my yard. He has since made himself quite at home. No screaming yet, just a few barks. He "talks" to me and now runs with the flock when they see me and all come running to greet me. He has ALMOST eaten out of my hand. I can walk by him now and he won't sidle away.

Folks on the NorCal thread say he is about a year old. (I posted a couple of pictures there.)

I am becoming quite fond of him.
I think they are quite expensive, what a nice present for you to have just showed up in your yard and making himself right at home. Maybe eventually his mate will arrive.

Yes, I know - I actually refer to him as my Free Peacock; volunteer just sounded more appropriate in my signature lines. It wasn't like someone "gave" him to me for no payment. The other day I saw a peahen and a poult crossing the road about three miles from my house and I wondered, "Is this Kevin's family and he abandoned them?". He had nothing to say when I questioned him about it. Now, to keep this to the topic, the goslings want to bill him because he doesn't look like any chicken in the flock and they've already established their High Gooseness Rank with the chickens. Sarge the MW dislikes Kevin, but I think it's because he doesn't understand how this bird thing got here; all my other poultry have been hatched here and grown up with the flock. Plus, Kevin also gets on the roof of my house, which is Sarge's favorite guard post. The ganders just ignore Kevin. They are secure in their Gooseness Status.

I had bought some peacock eggs about 5 years or so ago and hatched out peacocks. In all the different eggs I hatched all but one was a female. She was in the one pen with the other two peacocks she hatched with. Believe it or not the Silver Pied peacock picked the heck out of her head and she died. I have no idea why he killed her? I was new to peacocks and had no idea of how they acted.
But anyway I fell in love with the peacocks!!! They use to follow me around the yard. They yelled sometimes but not all the time. My husband had to take care of all my birds when I had to have operations and he said he was not going to take care of the ducks, geese, peacocks, horses and the dog. He is retired and I can not see why that would bother him?
So I had to sell all my ducks but two and then a hawk got my female I had for about 6 years. Had to sell all my peacocks too! I did this so I could keep my geese. He is now starting to complain about them and I told him I got rid of everything you complained about and am NOT giving up my geese!!!!!

I have been trying to sell the horses but no one wants to pay a decent price for some beautiful horses...... Everyone wants to pay less than what we paid for them. My gosh they are halter broke, saddle broke to ride and still they want them trained more?????

I think you need to stop and ask this pea hen and poult if they have lost a runaway dh. Kevin may have amnesia and really would like to see his family again.

She has also picked her new favorite spot in the car. She WANTS to be in the drivers lap, but that's just not going to happen lol. She is totally quiet with her head out the window. Then she gets really breave when we slow down or stop and sticks her head WAY out to survey everything

Awww, those photos remind me of the day I got Angus! The CraigsList ad said young male Toulouse.... Of course he was still young at 8 weeks, but he was HUGE. He was terrified in the cardboard box in the front passenger seat, so I pulled him into my lap for the drive home.

He snuggled against me with his head tucked between our bodies, very still. Which was good - I was driving!

But when we slowed down at signal lights, he got brave, too. He'd look over my shoulder, then lean out to look at .... Everything. Hot July day two years ago. Everybody's car windows were down. I got a LOT of looks from passersby, lemme tell ya.

Of course, Angus also crapped in my lap during that drive, but I knew I could shower and my clothes were washable. The snuggle had been worth it.
