Toulouse Geese Thread

Thanks Jtn.
The problem was that I will be getting two female geese , and I don't know how agressive they will be if at all.
Protecting the ducks was the reason I am getting geese , but I don't want Chinese or African because they are way too noisy!
I've read a lot about the Toulouse geese , and most people say they (the females) are shy.
The ganders are probably different , but like you said , they'd probably just protect the females and ignore the ducks.
Plus I don't want any babies......at least not yet.

My females are not protectors. They are shy and sweet and will follow me around when I am out in the field with them. They will honk is something is around that they don't recognize but most of the time they are content to just be beautiful ladies.

Ok quick question! :)

I have 4 geese, 1 obvious pair....the 3rd follows about 2-3 ft behind them(I assume this one is also a female). The 4th has (for about a week now) been going off and doing it's own thing and looking perticularly sad about it. My question is could #4 be a gander that has been chased off by the mated pair, and would gander #1 keep 2 girlfriends when there is another gander around? :/

OR....could #4 be sick?! :( Goose newb here, please help!

*Edited for spelling...stupid 'smart phones'!

It could be any of the above. lets hope it's not sick. what ages and have you seen any eggs? Yes ganders will take on 2 females but still have one special. Is there any way to separate the 2 that are kinda by themselves. just to see if anything comes of it. give them their own pool and watch to see if any mating goes on or if you start seeing 2 eggs. Have you noticed the 4th one being chased off by the King and Queen? they maybe keeping him from food so you need to keep an eye on things and see if you can figure out what maybe going on. Do they all 4 sleep in the same house and are they getting along in there can you see any feathers missing from #4 like he's being picked on?

They are roughly about a year old (I'm not 100% sure how old) and yes I've gotten 3 eggs before it snowed again and put a kibosh on that. They all free range on a farm right now and have free acess to feed at all times. I unfortunately can't separate them yet, I want to as soon as I can get them out to my new house.
I haven't noticed any fighting or anything...it just all of a sudden quit hanging out with the others. I did notice that it had a little clear slime near it's vent yesterday when I went to feed though. :(

I'd keep a close eye on that one, something maybe going on. Since egg laying is going on being egg bound is always something we need to watch out for and pray it never happens. if you don't notice improvement in next day or so you might want to catch her and do some examining feel her belly down around her vent for egg or swelling. They can go down pretty fast though so hopefully it isn't something like that.

Ok I'll keep an eye on it :/ I hope it's just a gander thats getting bullied. Cause I can remedy that pretty easily. How would you help it if it's egg bound?

I'll keep ya updated on what happens either way. Thank you for your help!

Warm bath soaks can sometimes help them relax enough to pass an egg. sometimes you can manually get it out very carefully. also sitting in a quiet dark place on heated towels from the dryer I have read can help. Causes humidity under the goose. Hopefully that isn't it but when you said about discharge raises a red flag so see how she looks today, also you might see her if a her squatting or vent pulsing. signs she needs to lay an egg.

So I'm still not sure of wether it was a goose or gander, but it was real sick...I wished I coulda done more for the poor thing :( it died yesterday night. And by the time I found it the crows had cleaned it up. :( now I'm down to a trio, hopefully with 2 girls...still no eggs since the last snow storm to count. :/
