Toulouse Geese Thread

I got 8 Toulouse geese last spring. I lost one to a predator. The seven have been very vocal and lots of drama going on lately, so I assume it's mating season. This morning I was missing a goose. I searched frantically for her and finally found her. She has a nest inside my goat's hutch!

I'm not sure if she'll allow the goats in at all or not? I assume she's laid an egg or at least plans too? Do they always go broody when they lay or will they leave some eggs? If I want some to eat, do I have to steal them from her? I'm willing to let her hatch if she wants. I just assumed I'd find an egg one day, I didn't prepare for a fully broody goose right off the bat! I am excited!

*UPDATE* Okay, she's not broody, she was just squatting. There were 8 eggs on the nest! My four females must all be laying! I think I may eat a few and fire up the incubator for the rest!

Need some help. I have ordered 2 female Toulouse. I already have 2 Toulouse/Brn Chinese ganders almost a year old. I would like them to pair off. Not be a trio with 1 left out.
My question..... When the goslings are old enough to join the boys, should I separate the ganders? Each with a female? So they will pair off?

If your weather permits leave the eggs until she gets a number she is happy with, I'd say you'll have a broody soon.

Goose eggs are yummy though.

She is nesting.. will be broody very soon! Goose that are imprinted will be ok with the livestock they know. I have had 3 or 4 goose brood nests together, right inside my goats house. My goats have a sleeping platform. Scovies and geese nest under it.
I wait to hatch until the frost has passed. I have lost too many clutches from a sudden deep freeze. Many of the first eggs aren't fertile, so you candle and wind up an incubator or nest full of infertile eggs, ugh. Let me tell you rotten eggs are horrible.We use the eggs to feed us until I see fertility in the yolk, then I start hatching. 99% of my gosling go to my vet, he has a huge poultry farm. We visited last October, and it was heart warming to see my babies, some almost 4 years old are all still there.
My point is, have a plan as to where goslings will go. Unless you use geese as a means of feeding your family, you will find yourself over run in a year. Goslings are soooo precious! But once grown, they are not for everyone.I take in as many unwanted geese as I can but the reality is many folks don't like them.

Thanks for the input. I think I'm going to candle these eggs that I have in the incubator and if they're not fertile, I'm going to scrap the hatching idea. I DON'T want to be over-run with geese! If I get my pond fixed and can get them to move to the horse pasture, I'll have room for more, but I still don't want too many.

So far the four girls are sharing one nest. I got three more eggs yesterday and today they were fussing over the nest, but no one laid anything. They're all out grazing now. We've actually got grass sprouting already and they've abandoned their feed and are grazing instead!

The geese do sometimes chase the goats, and they go after my horses when I walk them through that pasture, but they give up easily.

I'm going to be introducing a new LGD puppy tomorrow. He will be pastured with the goats and geese. He's 4 1/2 months old and I'm worried that the geese are going to terrorize him! I have put up a temporary pen for him to get a break from the geese and to show him where to sleep at night. The geese also have their own pasture that they can escape too where the goats and dog can't bother them. That's why I was so surprised that they laid their eggs right in with the goats rather than choosing a private spot?

Sorry to post this out of nowhere but I was wondering if any of you live in Arizona that would be willing to sell a single female gosling I'm interested in a diapered indoor goose and will even give an extra tip since it is just one gosling. BTW the birds on this thread are gorgeous!!! Will be looking through the comments as I'm new here I'm really liking this so far! And ty in advance BTW!

Here is a random posting: can anyone tell me if my Toulouse geese are both ganders? I suspect they are because they are almost 2 years old (June goslings) and no eggs yet. Photos 1 and 2 are of Gary-definitely sure that he is a gander. Pictures 3 and 4 are Lucy-I'm hoping she is a goose! Thanks for the help

Welcome to the forum Tiffjo! If you don't find what you are looking for through this forum, try your local feed stores or check online at hatcheries. Most hatcheries will sex a gosling for an additional fee and if there is a minimum number of goslings to order, you can always find homes, especially if you order just females. Good luck!

@jchny2000 I know you don't have Toulouse but your good at knowing.
