I remember some of my favourite toys as a kid were the antique Barbies my aunt had (and my Brenda Breyer doll). The were far more realistic looking and had clothes and jewelry that had buttons, snaps and other small, verboten items on them. I think in our desperation to make children safe without actually having to keep an eye on them, we've made toys into clunky, chunky, overly-sanitized, boring hunks of plastic. Without all the hype and endorsements, the boringness would be too apparent.

well i like all the cool stuff that crayola just came out with... i wonder if i can buy it for my neices and nephews and just pla ywith it myself. dang, if i had kids, i could buy it and keep it at my house!!!

you need to check out some of the earthy type companies......sad to say the better toys are more expensive-- but hey! Hearthsong, and companies like that.

Turn the TV off and they will care less. I was quite the nerdy kid as a child, and only watched the Discovery Channel (by choice). I didn't know who half the cool characters were. I wanted books and art stuff for Christmas, because I used my own imagination rather than dreaming about stuff someone else had already come up with.

I agree with everything that has been said. I looked for clothing today for my 4 mo. grandson for Christmas at Wal-Mart and everything was from China, which is my pet peeve. I cornered an associate and asked if she had anything that was not from China. Of course not--and she added you won't find anything but China in the toy department. If I had a granddaughter I would buy a doll at a thrift store and make it beautiful clothing. I bought my son an expensive history book and under the label read "China." What are we to do!
