Tractor Supply Employee Knowledge About Chicks

Quote:
I think they should hire you as the Director in the Tractor Supply Corporate office, so that you can send out that memo and other useful info to all of the TSC stores. Excellent idea !!!

I have to say there are three farm supply stores in my immediate area and all three are wonderful. the employees are knowledgeable, friendly and fast. They always have just what I need whether it be chickens, feed, or medicine. I love my feed stores!

I don't care how much knowledge the staff has regarding chickens. It's my job to do the homework before I go in to make a purchase. I'm just glad they offer chick days--only because it's a sign that spring is on the way. I love to shop feed stores--any place and any time.

This has been an interesting thread. I am very much a newbie. We have chicks ordered thru 4H and I don't even know what type we are getting other than 'good layers and all female'. Works for me right now. After we get going, I will look into other breeds and may just take my chances with the 'mystery bird bins' at TSC.

TSC just opened in the last year or 2 here. While they don't have much of a real selection, just a smattering of this or that, they have been friendly, friendlier than the home owned feed stores here. We inherited 3 goats last fall and we have always tried to buy local. One local place was super nice until I took my 'nonwhite' children with me to buy hay and feed. I couldn't get any service that day at the 'family owned store'. Considering we were the only ones there, I can't blame it on anything other than an attitude like the bolded above. I refuse to return there with my business. At the other family owned store they are almost always busy. If you want hay or feed it is no big deal but if you want that woman to come out from behind the registar to help you find something, or even tell you where to begin looking, forget about it. At least I can go to the TSC and tell someone what I am looking for. If I actually know a product name or description they can look it up on a computer, tell me if it is in stock or not. And the current workers here treat my kids like royalty.

The main thing I have against TSC is that they stack chick started right beside the chicks with no price on it. When I inquired about the price they stammered around and said it should be "7 or 8 or 10 dollars". I laughed and asked for a more accurate quote and then it was $14.50 for 50 pounds!! I staggered out of the store shocked. Starter feed right down the road is $9.40 for 50 lbs. I guess they figure people will buy chicks and just pick up a bag and not want to complain when they are going through checkout. This is pretty low tactics in my book.

I pay about $14.50 a bag of starter feed up here in PA - and it's basically the same price at the locally-owned feed store. I wish I could buy it somewhere for $9.50 a bag! I do prefer my feed store because it's on my way home from work and they are very knowledgable about everything I've asked them. However, I do go to TSC to buy feed from time to time if I'm up that way. I also love TSC for their selection of books and magazines!

I've had chickens now for 2 years, and I notice that our TSC is getting a much bigger selection of chicken-stuff. That makes me happy!

I agree with the above poster that said it's the buyers responsibility to know what they're buying. That being said, I have been known to make an impulse purchase or two at TSC myself.

WOW my tractor supply must be really good. There is 5 or 6 really good employees and you cant go in there without them stopping you at least 3 times asking you if u need help or something like that. When i do need help they are very knowledgable. Had a question about horses one time and they went and got a specific employee who is good with horses. Now sometimes their chicks can get mixed up but i think it is because little kids pick them up and put them in the wrong bins. I like my TSC

i paid $14.95 for a 50lb bag of chick starter medicated. bluesael brand, at my feed store the other day. iv noticed since december the feed has gone way up at my local store. as everything else has now a days.

A while back I went in with a friend to a local farm and ranch supply store. They had really cute little s/r seebrights. The gal there swore she could vent sex them and handed my friend a 'pullet'. She showed us the techique and sounded so convincing my friend walked out with 'her'. Total impulse buy.

She of course became a very obnoxious little rooster that she had to re-home. Live and learn.

I have no objections to people that work in TSC that know nothing about their chicks or the feed or medication. What I object to it their acting like they know and, as a result, give out bad advice. Some people can't admit they just don't know. And that goes for places other than TSC as well.
