Great find! I found Rock Island fertile eggs in my local SaveMart. I will be buying some for the Easter Hatch-along.

Ooo! Good luck!

Just wondering....do these become part of your laying flock or would they be suitable as "dual purpose" birds?
I lost all my chickens last year when I decided build a coop away from the house. My poor house sitter was texting me daily saying "another chicken has gone missing" by the time I got home from Hawaii all were gone!

I had to start over and the main reason I keep chickens for egg production, however my partner wanted some reds as "friendly" birds so that's why we got the reds. I like any production chicken for the feed-conversion ratio and what better way to get a production chicken than from production eggs? lol

The California Whites are not good meat birds as they are very small compared to any dual purpose bird. I honestly don't believe in dual purpose. I've tasted a dual purpose chicken and does not compare to Cornish X's :)

Aww man...that sucks about losing all your birds. It is so ard when things are going badly and you can;t get home to deal with it. Hope you at least has a really great trip to Hawaii.

I just bought 4 Cornish X about a week ago and will be trying my hand at processing in about 6 weeks. Those guys are huge already for 2 week olds. I was just wondering if that would be an option with ones hatched from store eggs. I will have to do some investigating to see if I can find out what kind the Rock House eggs are likely to be.

Good luck with the Cornish X, don't name them or get attached!

day 7 for me (started on the 19th) so i canceled and out of the 12 TJs that i have in the bator, 1 was infertile, 1 was an early quitter, and one was a bit questionable but seemed to be developing. SOOO EXCITED!!!!!!!!!!

Nice numbers. I think we should start putting locations where we are finding viable eggs, city and state?
Found mine in a trader joes in california near LA. a lot of the stores in the less busy parts of LA sell fettle eggs (e.g. Trader Joes, Whole Foods, Sprouts etc.)

I definitley will not get attached. That is one reason I bought them ....so my first ones would not be ones I am attached to. They are in the garage in a brooder and I just feed and water and clean up after them. I figure once I get thru it the first time it wil not be as hard in the future, even if I have to do one of my layers. I have a Red Sex link that is a couple of years old and has laid mostly rubber eggs for the last 6 months. She may be next after the Cornish....but will be for the stewpot.

I went to the website for the company that produces Rock Island eggs (Judy's Family Farm via Petaluma egg Company). The hens there look like prduction reds.

Jus thought id post this to help out

I don't know if this one is too accurate...

Thanks! They look pretty accurate on the ones I am familiar with...except the Ameraucana egg on the second one. That looks more like an olive egger to me. True Ameraucanas lay blue or blue-green eggs like in the first pic......at least the ones not sold at hatcheries that should be called Easter Eggers
