Trader Joes & Other Grocery Store Egg Hatching Club - Are you a Member

Right now there's six hatched and eight pips and a lot of lolling about lazy eggs getting their act together (hopefully.) Perhaps things will be really hopping with a full bator when I get up in the morning. One of the chicks has kind of a red cast to its fuzz along with the black smudges. Only two with the dots at this point.

I'll post pics when I take them out of the incubator...may be a day or so.

I am getting some brown on my TJ's chicks along with a bit of barring in one tail. There are quite a bit of spots too.

These are the TJ's chicks in their new brooder along with some Australorps:

A few years ago somebody mentioned that they probably use their Hy-Line brown roos. Who knows? They're just cute!

Anyway, moved them into the brooder this morning. 26 chicks.

Nice hatch! I bet you get at least a couple of pullets!

Kidding, you should bet close to half pullets with a hatch like this.

I just call them TJ's or Production Whites. The hen stock is a Hy-Line (genetically selectively bred for high egg production and low feed consumption) and the rooster(s) could be -- I dunno -- Australorp, California White, Hy-Line brown.... Whatever they put into the flock to be able to market fertile eggs.

I do know that TeJae, the Trader Joe's pullet I have from the September Hatch-Along, is a real sweetie. Friendly and flies up onto my shoulder. I wouldn't mind a few more in the coop like her.
