okay last batch failed because i saw that the bator was off and the eggs were cold with condensation on the outside of the eggs, so i assumed they were dead. i decided to buy 2 dozen fertile TJ eggs to see if they work this time!

Mine didnt hatch.I opened them up and i dont think they were ever fertile. While it isnt a bad idea im going to concentrate on my quail hatching.I really wanted leghorns anyhow. With the price of feed i think leghorns would be better than the brown layer.

Well, the broody leghorn did it! kind of....
Monday morning ( a day early) i found this! SO CUTE!!!

On the down side. When i got home that evening. I found this chick on the other side of the coop. cold and dead;( with two small non-deadly peck marks. We also saw that two more chicks were trying to hatch. This morning neither of them had made it out of the shell. At 10 am i found that one had died before braking out of the shell. The 2nd one was still fighting. I pulled off a small piece and left the chick to get out the rest of the way by it's self. 5 min later i checked again. the chick had made it out of the shell. It was also out of the nest box, and mom was wondering around?! The chick also has a small peck mark on it's tummy. Since i wasn't able to separate the broody, (only one coop) it could have been the mommy or another hen...
I removed this baby, and have it indoors with a heat lamp for now. I will be putting it inside a wire cage, inside the coop, with the heat lamp, in a day or two.

Cool! thats actually the first time ive read of a leghorn being broody. Most of what i read says its bred out of them in search of egg laying without stopping.

That's also what I expected when I baught them. This Hen laid her first egg at 19 weeks, went broody at 23 weeks, and has stayed broody for 5 weeks. We couldn't find fertile eggs for a while....

alright everyone i went serious! i bought 2 dozen of TJ fertile eggs and i put them in the bator. about 3-5 days later, WE HAVE LIFE IN ALL 23 EGGS!!

LOL, what happened to #24? Did you drop the thermometer on it, like I did? LOL Congratulations!

I do believe TJ in Oregon has the fertile eggs, but may depend on where you are?
