Trapping dogs - UPDATE

I actually did talk to the shelter last week about borrowing a live trap, and drove out that same day to get it, but the volunteers had already left for the day by the time I got there. Then I caught my neighbor the next day to talk to her and show her the photos, and she assured me she'd keep it tied up, so I figured I didn't need the trap anymore. Guess I will be making another trip to the shelter today...

I am sorry..! This is turning out to be such a flipping chore for you when in reality YOU are the "victim", or rather the chickens. Either way.. This is certainly all backwards. I will never understand why some people are born with compassion and humanity that STAYS with them into adulthood.

If I were your neighbor, I would get a nice kennel or fence a part of my property, basically do what it took to keep MY responsibility from killing/badgering YOUR responsibility. Then, I would make it a point to keep in contact with you, make sure there are no more sightings.

I don't get why this is so hard for some people to grasp..

I have lost chickens to neighbors dog and it is very sad. In most places there are livestock laws and if someones animals kills your livestock they are responible and you have the right to bill them. Also calling the sheriifs office to enforce this also helps. I'm sorry but I do not feel you owe this neighbor anything, she is not responible pet owner if she allows it to roam free killing yours. My neighbor paid us for the loss of our chickens and also because they were not able to keep their dog penned up, had to get rid of the dogs. You have just as much rights as she does to have your animals safe on your property. As I see it the law is on your side, she is in the wrong.

If you can snare it and/or shoot it I would opt for that. Why bother going to through the hassle of getting a trap and hoping to catch it then calling AC or taking the dog in?

Take care of the problem and when the neighbor asks you say you have not seen the dog.No sense starting a war by saying you killed it,or even saying you took it to AC(if you opt for that).Loose animals disappear all the time. That is the risk you allow by letting though out to roam.

Yes, this neighbor helped me out before when one of my animals escaped, so I was trying to return the favor. Only I had gone to significant effort and expense to try to contain my livestock from the very beginning (and even more so after one escaped), while she simply let her dog be outside loose and unattended many times.

Anyway... I got the live trap and set it up tonight. I'll see what I catch (probably the coon I keep seeing on my trailcam

). I had over 1100 photos from the last week, but unfortunately the dog didn't come close enough to the camera to trigger it yesterday. So all I have are the tracks from that visit.

In any case, I'm wishing I hadn't wanted to give this neighbor a chance, after talking to her last week and the response I got from her when I did, I really don't think she deserved it. And then less than a week later and it's already been back.

I haven't decided what to do with the dog yet if I catch it...

Take it to animal control as a chicken killing stray!

That was my original plan. But did you know you can buy skunk scent in bottles from Cabelas? I'm thinking that might provide some motivation for keeping the dog tied up. And I would be the obvious suspect if it ended up at the shelter... but not if it came home smelling like skunk.
