Trashy dogs!

So the dogs broke in. That helps make it clearer what happened.

Again I am sorry you lost the birds.

Thinking....if they got into your coop....they were in your yard. I do not know what breed your dog is or how old your daughter is.

I would be fencing my yard pronto.

If your yard is to large to fence all at once then maybe in sections.

Electric poultry netting (if electric fencing is allowed where you are) can help create a barrier around your coop.

Fat chance of that, he has a yard full of cars to work on that he never seems to finish and what time he is not there, he spends it on the road doing finish carpentry. I rarely see him unless it is with a beer in his hand. I have known him for the 20 years we have lived beside him and have even given him a couple dozen eggs. I bear him no ill will but his dogs on the other hand will unfortunately get what is coming to them. If they show up in my yard again and I in any way feel threatened, they will not be leaving my yard under their own power again...

I have been on this earth for 46 years and it seems like I have been taking it up the tailpipe for 36 of those years. People do whatever they want in the end and never get punished. If one action of mine infringed on anyone else's rights, they would be ready to put me under the jail and yet some folks seem to get away with murder(figuratively speaking of course). I am just so tired of all the "oh well" attitude I get from everyone else. I get told all the time "what kind of Christian are you"? I guess from this day forward, it will be the kind who is not a door mat. Don't get me wrong, I love all the empathy I get from you fine folks and the good advice I get from the rest of you but it is everyone else who is really starting to grate on me. In the end I will just have to get over it and hope they others get their just deserts...Thank you all for listening to my soapbox rantings.....

But again, it’s not the dogs fault. You can’t blame them, they have the natural instinct to go after “prey.”

It’s the owners fault, they should be properly caring for their dogs which includes containing them.

Sorry for your loss. I am a cat person. My cats LEARNED themselves not to attack my chickens. They never touched one, not even the neighbors cat, although that is still a fear of mine. This is why my dog is not an outdoor dog. She only goes outside for a walk and I take her on a leash for her to go to the bathroom. Now my neighbors dogs go where they wish, they let them out with no concern for the neighborhood chickens.

I try to remind myself that 99.9% of people are “good” inside- just that some of them need to be reminded to do the right thing. That other 0.01% - nothing is going to get through to them. Your neighbor sounds like he might be 1 of the latter. Nothing feels better than standing up to one of those a holes.
As for his dogs- if the law allows you to protect you livestock- I’m all for it, though I hate to see the animal suffer because of a crap owner. I’d still engage animal control and/or law enforcement. That way, if you do need to handle those dogs yourself, you have some record of complaint and backup in a neighbor dispute.
good luck.

Sorry for the loss. A fence can be dug under, and is also expensive. It is the dog owner that has the responsibility to contain his dogs properly. 3 dogs can be a pack and when they act like a pack, there is more danger.

when you redo the coop/run. Add electric fencing. Prior to this, you could add electric fence to your yard perimeter and bait it so each dog gets a jolt and learns that your yard is off limits. Hopefully you have the ability to add electric.

otherwise, you can trap his dogs and take them to the shelter. This provides documentation they were out and the owner has to pay to get them back usually.

animal control could be notified bc, as another pointed out, they could harm a person. Irregardless of how a pit was raised, they are particularly strong dogs, and have a greater ability to harm than many other dogs. They still have their inherent dog/predator instincts.

I love all dog breeds and it's not the dogs fault they act like this... It's the owners fault. The dogs were never trained to act right. I have a red nose pit mix and she's a sweet girl, but she knows all birds are off limits. She actually watches them for me, her favorites are the Polish.

I'm sorry you lost your chickens :hugsand I'm sorry that you have to deal with neighbors like this.
