Treating Tapeworms - Under Construction

Pics
Insects are the vectors for tapeworm infections in poultry. Try controlling the insect population and that will reduce reinfections.
Observe where your birds are foraging. Remove them from that area into a different area. In other words, rotate pasture or foraging areas at least monthly.
Inspect your coops for insects and use insecticides accordingly, interior and exterior. Remove and burn/incinerate litter weekly for about a month. Add a layer of sand in pens/runs.
Give each bird (individually) a dose of the Equimax orally. Then redose each bird orally again in 10 days. Forget the Avitrol Plus.

I tried Equimax for the last treatment but it was the same they kept coming back...
Can I spray my backyard with insecticide without hurting the chooks?!

You'll have to read the label or call the manufacturer and ask them.

I've dealt with tapeworms often in chickens. I've used Albendazole, Zimecterin Gold and Equimax to treat them with success.

Do this when using Equimax: Withhold feeding your chickens for 24 hours prior to treating them with the Equimax. Do not let them free range, keep them penned up for a full 24 hours without feeding them. Dont worry, they arnt going to die of starvation. Make sure they have water to drink.

After 24 hours are up, early in the morning preferably, dose them with the Equimax one at a time.
Your birds will be very hungry, so will the tapeworms. You'll be feeding the tapeworms the wormer and it will kill them dead. It never fails.

Then wait 4 hours before feeding your chickens their feed. When you feed them, feed them a small ration at a time over the course of the afternoon, increasing the ration as you go until back to normal feeding later in the afternoon/early evening.

If you dont do this they will gorge their feed, possibly causing impacted crop or gizzard.
Keep in mind that you still have to try to control insects in your environment, Good luck.

New question for this forum-
Even though I know better, I decided to give equimax in bread (1 of the hens had tapes show up in fecal test) instead of oral dosing each bird individually. It’s likely one of the hens stole a piece and got 2 equimax bread pieces (.25 ml equimax per piece of bread). She’s an average size red sex link, 2 years old. If she did, how sensitive are they to overdose??? I did see her wipe some off her beak so I know she didn’t eat it all, but I’m concerned. And I should have known better, when I redose in 10 days I will just put it in their mouths directly.

I think she will be fine. :D

Disclaimer - There are no FDA approved drugs for treating tapeworms in poultry, so please consult with your vet and figure out what the withdrawal time is.

Praziquantel is the best drug to treat tapeworms in poultry. Dose is 10 mg/kg (4.54 mg per pound) once repeat in 10-14 days.

Available products
  • Thomas labs make a powder and capsules that are just praziquantel. I need to do the math on this.
  • MedPet make MEDIWORM for pigeons which is praziquantel and pyrantel pamoate.
  • Droncit may be used, but will be very expensive!
  • Wormout Gel has 20 mg/ml Praziquantel, 20 mg/ml Oxfendazole. Dose is 0.23 ml per pound or 1.14 ml per five pounds.
  • Equimax horse paste has 140.3 mg/ml Praziquantel, 18.7 mg/ml ivermectin. Dose is ~0.033 ml per pound, or 0.16 ml per five pounds.
  • Zimectrin Gold horse paste 77.5 mg/ml Praziquantel, 15.5 mg/ml ivermectin. Dose is ~0.06 ml per pound or 0.3 ml per five pounds
Thank you good information.
