I usually start with a young sapling and just keep the roots system contained. Prune and trim when needed. I have the mimosa and a Japanese maple growing outside from this spring. As long as they survive ohio winter, I'll move them to a planter in the spring, just to give them some time to grow. I have a small elm tree that been hit with the mower.
