I stopped by TSC yesterday evening since I was in the area...and since I hadn't been stopped by in a few days. They claimed they were getting three shipments of chicks this week. Anyway. I was absolutely disgusted by the conditions the chicks were living in! There were so many chicks in the bin that they could hardly move. The wood shavings at the bottom of the bin were soaked and most of the chicks had matted bellies, I assumed their bellies were matted from rubbing on the wet/dirty shavings. They didn't even have any food in their feeder! This is the second time that we've gone in and the chicks didn't have any food. My DH took it upon himself to feed the chicks, they were SO excited to get food! The bins were so filthy and smelled so badly that I was tempted to ask if I could do the chick shuffle (there was one empty bin) and clean the bins out myself!! They had a few ducks left too and the poor ducks weren't any better off than the chickens as far as the wood shavings. They also had matted feathers, but at least there wasn't a whole lot of them so they weren't packed in like sardines.

Several of the chicks had scabs on them, I assume because they were pecking at each other since they were so cramped. I picked up one chick that traumatized me it looked so bad. Seriously, I've never seen such a thing and don't know what would cause it. The poor little chick's eyes were bugging out of its head. Literally, she had black beady eyes popping right out of her little head.

I wasn't sure what to do. I felt bad just leaving without complaining and making sure the cages were going to be cleaned. I did make comments to the employees and one even saw DH feeding the chicks. None of the employees said anything though, maybe they didn't think it was strange since we're in there so often. Which makes me wonder if they would have cared if I offered to clean the cages, probably not! So it looks like I've maxed out on my TSC chicks.....might just have to order more later. I told DH yesterday that he needs to build a new bigger...much bigger...chicken coop. These dang chickens are like some sort of feathered drug! I'm an addict!!! ....Hello, my name is Kristen and I'm a chicken addict.

Wow, I'm shocked to hear they were kept in such conditions. I guess I'm so surprised because the TSC that I go to was a complete opposite experience. Our store even has a very farmer looking gentleman stationed near the birds to offer all kinds of expert advice. However, the conditions at your store sound horrible. Maybe an e-mail to the store manager will alert him/her that the employees are neglecting the chicks.

Yes,I would mention it to the head manager too either in person or email. They should make changes if they are faced with a possible fine for poor animal care.

I don't know if this is law,but don't stores have to have a permit to sell animals? Don't they get inspected like restaurants get inspected by someone from the health department?

I am going soon to my local TSC for chicks, and will report poor conditions.Poor chickies!

I was at my local TSC yesterday and all they had that day was a bin of bantams (all silkies) and they looked fine. Their bin was clean, they were not crowded and had clean food and water and a heat lamp. I talked with the dept manager while I was talking with a young couple about the chicks and he was knowledgeable about chicks and knew what breed they were.

I think that how your TSC takes care of their chicks all depends on the individual employees in that Dept. or store.

It was really hard leaving the store and not take along a few silkies ~ but they have a 6 chick minimum and I have 26 eggs in the bator due to hatch this weekend!

I would have never left that TSC store
with out reporting the chix poor conditions to some one
in charge.

Our TSC here have
great people caring for their chix
and they sell out fast.
My starter 6 chixs were bought there a few years ago.
and now,
I am a chicken addict.
and caretaker of 31 happy

I went in to our local TSC. They had a slew of assorted reds and leghorns...They all looked really healthy!! It took so much to just walk out of there without a few to take home. However, I set up my bator yesterday when I got home, and plan to set eggs tonight! i gotta get my chickie fix!

That is sad to hear about. At my local TSC it appears that they must change out the litter/water/food at least twice a day for their chicks and ducklings. Obviously, someone at that store needs some training on how to care for them properly. Poor little things....

Notify the management, their corperate office, and the local ASPCA, if you can. That is animal cruelty and they can be fined for it. That's just wrong.

Just putting a layer of clean shavings on top would help those chicks and could be done quickly. They can clean them out when it's more convenient. There is no excuse for them not having food. I'm so glad that people are advocating for these chicks.

I don't know what the laws are for how much space they are supposed to give the chicks. There probably are none. Starving them and making them live in so much wet poop that their feathers are soaked would be neglect and cruelty anywhere, though. Legally, I mean.

It's too bad the corporate headquarters doesn't care about any of this, AT ALL. If they did, they would have immediately put out a memo after the last one hit the news. It's not like they don't all have e-mail. They know this is happening in some of their stores and they just don't care.

At least some of their managers are decent people and do their jobs well. I give them a lot of credit for doing such a great job, while working for such a horrible corporation.

Same at the two nearest to us. I've been avoiding TSC this week. I have 2 eggs in the 'bator due to hatch on Easter and I'm picking up LF cochin chicks on Sat. from a show breeder.

I don't need more chicks, I don't need more chicks, I don't need more chicks, I don't need more chicks ...
