Turkey Talk for 2014

Just put my first turkey eggs in the hatcher. Originally set 8, of which 4 of them were found in a nest during the 18 degree days, we didn't know she was laying yet. I put those first four along with the next four she laid over the next 6 days in the incubator assuming that some would have frozen and be no good. I candled at 2 weeks and removed one dud and marked a possible quiter. Candled tonight and removed the marked one, so 6 out of 8 were good!!! I'm amazed, these are the first eggs from 8 month old royal palms. So eggcited to see them hatch this week.

I am very happy for you! Good luck on a great hatch!!

I can't stand having ten answers to one question.
At what (aproximate) age does a turkey begin to gobble? I can accept that a Midget White will begin before a BR. I am reading that a turkey begins anywhere from 2 weeks to 6 months. I am guessing there is a more "general" age.
And while I am at it, how many patterns of eggs are there (is it more like three, or thirty?) and what do eggs weigh?

Are you trying to make me come see you? Did we meet at the get together? I was the crazy one no one liked!

I didn't go to the meet up, so no. No one liked you? Why's that? Intimidated by the leather and the motorcycle?
And... Are you coming to see me, my turkeys, the fence or Home Depot? LOL! My fence is crap. Someone used pallets of all kinds and sizes with 3' rabbit wire at the bottom. I was told it was used for pigs. Later on it housed a pony. I just screwed some landscaping timbers to the existing crap fence (less time and less work) to keep the turkeys in for now. I want to use my shed addition, divide off 2 8'x8' stalls and run fence off them for their runs. I need to move a few things before I can make the runs as large as I want to. Like the current turkey shed and the little dog house/run (5x4' dog house someone made and a small 4x6x2 high kennel attached to it). I used it for my Silkies when I had them, then my Mille Fleur Cochin grow out, Blue/Black/Chocolate LF projects and then my Ameraucana grow out. I added a nest box to it with 2 nest spaces.

This place is crap compared to the 110ac farm we rented. I miss the large 50x54' barn w/ the bottom run-in and milk parlor (horses were in there) and my 30x12' shed for my chickens. I miss being so far away from the neighbors and the road that I could free range without fear. I would love to see my turkeys out running around free! My daughter wouldn't. She's afraid of my tom because of his drumming and displaying. Yes she isn't afraid of my gander who is a bird you need to watch your back with - as my husband found out today. He was trying to chase my husband around but never once came after me. If Dewey left the run (where the turkeys are going), he'd follow his every move. I was standing there by the fence waiting and Beau never paid any mind to me. He and I have had our rounds and I suspect he knows I won't be pushed around and it could hurt if you try. Pride or otherwise...

I rambled... Sorry!

Quote: Ha ha! I think I was liked just fine.
And to answer your question, yes to all the above. You, the turkeys, the fence, and Home Depot. We don't have one. I think there is a DIY about an hour away.
I can understand missing the big farm. I feel cramped on this property, and it is the biggest I have ever had. Then again, I have never had farm animals before.
Rambling is when you take up a whole page.

From the PA thread, I can't imagine people not liking you. ;)

I got TWO eggs today! Now if the Handsome boy would, or would be allowed to do his part...

I got a pretty decent sized cage this morning! Not big enough for my turkeys to live in, but I'm going to cover the top and put it in the pen so she will have a shelter to nest in if she so desires. Lol

Well my 10 month old bourbon red pair seem to be trying to breed, but not quite, the girl sits on the ground and the male looks like he's about to mont, but then the girl jumps up and runs away then does it al over again, ugg I want some eggs from her to incubate, but she's not breeding, Hopefully she'll get the hang of it soon.
