Turkey Talk for 2014

Ok, so my tom and my nasty rooster are in the freezer. Now I need a tom. Of course, a couple weeks ago, they were all over Craig's List. None now. Anyone in north TX have a spare BR tom? Anyone have BR eggs to sell? How about Speckled Sussex chickens? They're harder to find than hens teeth around here!

One of my blue slate hens was acting like she really wanted out of the flight pen tonight and very talkative. Hopefully she is getting ready to lay her first egg. I haven't seen her breed but the toms are paying them more attention. Last week they just kept pestering the royal palm hen that is already laying.

Well my 10 month old bourbon red pair seem to be trying to breed, but not quite, the girl sits on the ground and the male looks like he's about to mont, but then the girl jumps up and runs away then does it al over again, ugg I want some eggs from her to incubate, but she's not breeding, Hopefully she'll get the hang of it soon.

I have an extra BR tom until he goes to freezer camp. Too bad we are so far apart.

And I have SS-- a project bird, not SQ, but still delightful.

I wish so too, but I don't want your weather, so I'll stay here! LOL!

I may have found a BR tom, but I'll need to buy sight unseen. The guy doesn't know how to email a picture. But for $25, I'll risk it. He called during my agility class, so I'm calling him tomorrow.

I found some SS chicks too. I ordered 15. Now if I can find some poults, I'll be set for awhile.

Questions. I was told today that my BBB eggs probably didn't hatch because it's too early in the year. This person has one of my BBB toms and plans to set eggs in a couple weeks. Is this true? Will fertile turkey eggs not hatch until spring? Should I try collecting some eggs and trying again? I butchered the tom on Saturday, so approximately how long will the hen's eggs be fertile? Our weather is nuts. 86 degrees today, really cold and windy tomorrow, then back to the 60's. I don't know how anyone can figure out what time of year it is.

I am only answering what I believe to be true.
First, the eggs will be fertile for an average of 3 weeks. Closer to a month.
Second, unless the eggs freeze, they will hatch when they get warm. Since your eggs aren't frozen, and your temperatures are so warm (

) I am going to say try again.
