Turkey Talk for 2014

Well, tomorrow is lockdown day for the turkeys! Fingers crossed. They're locking down with duck eggs.

Has anyone lost a turkey hen to an owl before? I lost one hen and her only poult overnight. She was out with her babies and in the morning there was just a small circle of feathers to indicate the loss. It was the first and only night she was out and we know we have great horned owls in the area.
Anyhow, the rest of the babies were adopted by my other broody turkey hen, so they're doing okay. That's them with their lost mama. Their adopted mom is the bronze hen behind her.

Sorry for your loss. I have read that owls will take chickens, rabbits and even small dogs. If it was big enough and knew it could get away with it and was hungry I suppose an owl could kill a turkey, def a poult. The babes are adorable.

So I have 14 poults out of the 15 eggs I set, they all hatched but one of the poults died after a week. The rest are super healthy. We'll a week ago my BR hen finally went broody. But her clutch was outside. Instead of moving her, I risked a predator getting her, and didn't disturb her. We'll after a few days I saw a HUGE raccoon. any other time I would have moved her, but her eggs where fertile and I couldn't put them in my bator, plus I didn't have a broody. So I left her there over night. We'll she was alive and well the next morning but all the eggs where broken in what seemed to be a brawl with the 25 lb raccoon. She didn't have a scratch on her, but I wasn't too surprised she survived, since this isn't the first time she's kicked serious coon butt lol. We'll finally she is setting her THIRD attempted clutch in her coop where she, and her eggs will be safe.

I locked down my four eggs today, and I had two pips already! Looks like I might have some early birds.
