Turkey Talk for 2014

thank you so much, Sydney Acres, for your detailed reply on clipping their wings. Their momma is the first one to clip and I am about to head out there - she is a wild one and doesn't like to be touched in any way, so we will see how we go

I think the feathers on the poults are more likely to be blood feathers so will be extremely cautious. Thanks again!

One of my 4 month old Narragansetts is limping pretty bad. The first pic is of the foot he is not favoring. The second if of the foot he is avoiding putting pressure on. Any ideas on what I should do? Or should I just waiting and see for a day or two?

Anyone who isn't a first time turkey owner have any ideas. Is there anything wrong with the foot that I just seem to be missing? Is it a slipped tendon that I should splint (how would I know)?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

good luck !!!!!!!!
Thanks!! So I tossed two clears and the one that looked further behind is still growing. So we are at day 11 now and we have 11 little eggs with movement on the inside. It is very exciting!!

On another note, I think my biggest Narri poult is a male, it was one of the smallest of the clutch the breeder had and he thought it would be a girl because of the size difference. I swear I see some blue in the face, he gets red a lot in the neck and seems to want to face off with my caged BBW tom.

I love watching them outside; their pen is about 2/3 done and I can't wait to get them outside permanently. I water my orange trees when they are outside and they love to walk in the water, I think I am going to buy them a kiddie pool today. Does anyone else notice that their turkeys love water?

What is very possible is that he had a bad landing and hurt his hip. I have a tom that did have a bad landing on frozen ground. It took quite some time but he no longer limps.

Limping can be caused by a problem anywhere from the toenail to the pelvis, and anything in between. Is there a particular place on the foot, leg, hip, anywhere that is visually swollen, inflamed, staying at the wrong angle, moving in the wrong direction, or is different in some way than the normal side? If you feel along the length of both legs (unaffected side first), is there any place that the bird tolerated you touching on the unaffected side but consistently objects to being touched on the affected side? There's nothing obvious that I see in the picture, but pictures don't show everything.

I'm sorry that no one has given you any specific answers, but we just don't have enough information. Doing the wrong thing, like putting a splint on when one isn't needed, or putting it on the wrong area of the leg, could make things much worse than doing nothing at all. When an animal is limping but you don't know where the injury is on the leg, or specifically what type of injury it is, the best thing to do is either take the bird to someone who can examine it to determine what's wrong, or restrict exercise to prevent further injury and see if the limp improves/resolves on its own. Most of the limps in my birds have taken either one day or 2-3 weeks to heal, but some have taken months. I usually only keep them restricted for 3-7 days to see how they progress. From just an injury healing aspect they should probably be kept off exercise much longer, but there's multiple things to consider, so I rarely keep a bird confined much longer than that. I'm not saying that's what would be right for your bird, as I don't have enough information to know. I'm just providing examples of what I've had to do in the past with my own birds. I have never had to splint the legs on one of my birds, yet, and hopefully never will.

Foot looks fine. Check all joints. Especially the knee and hip joint. Check for redness on the skin and swelling. Next flex the joints and see if there is a pain reflex or unusual stiffness. Once the problem is located. I can help farther.

Just wanted to share my babies, roughly 6 & 8 weeks old now!! I think the one my daughter is holding is a Tom, its the calmest of all my birds with us but has been trying to fight some of the other birds, one of whom I know is a Tom. So in love with these guys
