Turkey Talk for 2014

As my understanding of line breeding it can be done for years with out having to bring fresh blood into your line. According to several articles written and co written by Mr. Frank Reese. This is the breeding method I am using.

Here is a pic of my 1st turkey I hatched a Bourbon Red and his friend a Buckeye.

It is the method I use also. I have heard if you line breed correctly you don't need to bring in new blood for up to 15 years. Other bring in new blood every few years but usually it is best to source out a line that is the same as your current line or similar so traits are similar and youll be less likely to have new unwanted traits turn up.

Completely off topic, I have my original two turkeys, JJ and Ethel. Tomorrow it will be announced I have won the powerball receiving 485 million dollars.

I want to travel to Australia after winning that money it is a place I have always wanted to go. I want to take JJ and Ethel with me. Does anyone know about bringing pet turkeys to Australia and what hoops I need to jump through?

The easiest country to import live animals from is Australia.

This is because they are the hardest country to ship live animals to.
@ozexpat is the person who can probably answer your question. The short answer is that it is almost impossible to import live animals into Australia.

Breeding the jake back to his mother would be fine. It is technically not called inbreeding it is called line breeding and is the most common way to breed. By doing this you are not weakening your stock you are actually, if breeding well, strengthening your stock. Breeding mother to son, father to daughter, aunt to nephew, uncle to niece, is all fine and is the best way to bring out the best qualities and lock them in. On occasion line breeding will also bring out traits you dont want or recessive genes will pop up and you need to cull for those. It is best to be avoid sibling mating though. You could bring in new blood every couple of years if you feel you need to.

Yep, that is what I was getting at. Line Breeding develops stronger traits, good and bad.

Would you please consider giving me an interest free loan? Thanks!

Wow! Congratulations.

Wow! Congratulations.

Why Thanks you,

The only thing that could go wrong with this would be my DW's failure to mark the right numbers on the form. I have told her screwing this up will have consequences.

Would you please consider giving me an interest free loan? Thanks!

I am considering it right now. I will be asking the magic 8 ball shortly if you are a good risk, last time I asked it, it said "doubtful, try later".

Now back on the topic of turkeys, I normally have one turkey hen that spends her nights inside the coop with the chickens, That hen is Ethel, yes, the one I want to take on vacation to Australia...

Tonight it is so bitterly cold here in Minnesota I am having a "Three Turkey Night" I have Ethel and two other hens inside tonight. The hens are smart enough in the cold to come inside, the Jakes not so smart.
