Turkey Talk for 2014

Ok, here we go... 7 days worth of gathering and 8 BR eggs in the new incubator... Plan is to collect each day and set another batch on Fridays until full or I hatch what I want for this year and next years breeding... Might hatch out another batch later this spring or early summer, found a person near me who also raises BR... once hatching is successful for both of us were going to trade eggs, a dozen for a dozen so we can both bring hopefully new blood into our pens..

So begins the madness

PS.. I know there is only seven there, I took this photo last night before I found one more egg this morning and set them all

My bratty turkey hens are jumping up to my chicken nest boxes and pecking the sitting hens. Hopefully, soon, I'll have a coop split down the middle for chickens and turkeys. But they'll still have to share the run. I'm hoping that a chicken sized pop door will keep the adult turkeys out of the chick side. Think it'll keep them out? They'll have their own side with an appropriately sized turkey door. Or maybe once the turkeys start laying, they'll lose interest in what the chickens are doing? It's always something.

My hen turkeys can squeeze through any door a rooster can get through... My hen turkeys do not even look at the chicken nest boxes, I don't think.

My late blooming turkey hen just laid an egg in one of the chickens nesting boxes.. Of course I have to have a rebel turkey... Removed all the eggs and set up a box within the coop as she is determined to lay in there and placed a fake egg in there... Told my Husband we are going to have to make sure the lower nesting boxes are egg free throughout the day lol

I have a BBW turkey hen who lays a nice speckled egg every evening and she jumps up about 2' to squeeze into position to deposit her egg on the chicken eggs.

Oh yeah, she weighs about 40 lbs too

That's quite a feat!

Are the eggs she is laying fertile?

Yes, she is being bred by a Blue Slate Tom and they are showing fertility. She is showing broody tendencies too, if she hatches the Rhode Island Reds that she is brooding, I will let her keep her own eggs to hatch. Though I don't really want any more turkeys that need to be caged at night.
