Turkey Talk for 2014

never hurts to try!

Ahhh, she had already gave them away...Oh well, she has 10 fresh ones so far and they are still laying, I am hoping for two dozen!! She just emailed me and asked if I wanted to try my hand at five goose eggs also... Going to throw them in (well, gently place them) for free... I'm horrible, I said yes... Much more reading is necessary, can I even incubate Turkeys and Geese together??

Most people don't realize that cooking releases a huge amount of nutrients from the cells of plants and meats -- at the cost of some energy input though. ( I'm also an advocate of eating fresh or frozen whole fruits and vegies too.) THere are a number of decent books on root cellering-- info which lists which crops store well in what temp and humidity. I still have 3 butternut squashes that are just starting to go, and one pumpkin still on the stair steps going to second floor. Winter squash holds up well. I did find, by mistake, that summer squash will also put on thick rind if it is a big over grown size and will hold for a long long time.

As you have 1 acre, have you looked into how to grow UP to increase yeilds?

based on my birds ther can be alot of variation between birds . . .

time is our biggest problem at this point
i am working 30 hours a week plus going to school (finished in 2 more years)
my wife this summer will be working her normal job plus she has a summer gig a couple nights a week
last years garden was about 20x40
if more time showed up we have plenty of room to make it bigger (maybe 30 x 60)
we went with black plastic which my wife liked because she gets to do the weeding.

with the plastic there was almost none to do.

we will keep working on projects around the house
at some point maybe we get most of them finished
but then i'm sure more will show up :)

thanks

yup.. you can incubate all sorts of eggs together.. I do it all the time.. and right now I have duck, goose and turkey eggs all in the same incubator

What is it with me?? wave a fertile egg in my face and I just have to put it in the incubator, My family thinks I need intervention

25# at nine months? Given my BBW weighed 35# DRESSED at 5 months, you have heritage bronzes. THe 25 # is about the dressed weight of the cross bred heritage that I just butchered over the weekend.

I know it is hard to compare with out2 birds side byside, and if you had a bbb and a heritae to grope, you would know immediately which was which. BUt as you only hve the one and given the info provided on the wt-- heritage type.

DOes it try to fly?? Only my over 1 year old heritage males don't fly anymore. Girls take to their wings. My BBW were grounded but good.

Pet or breeding prospects in this ones future??

i just picked up my tom
him & i got on the scale together
he added around 40# to what i weigh
& he is only 9 months old
i guess he is BBB

I'm gonna have to read up... I had planned on using the auto turner that came with my Hovabator still air but it looks as if Goose eggs are to big for it?? Maybe take out a few rows to lay the eggs down and just turn those a few times a day?
So temp 101.5-101.5 and 50 -55 % humidity the first 24 days and then take eggs out of turner and increase humidity to 80% but drop the temp to 98.-98.5% and this is good for both the Turkeys and the Geese....

they would have a fit if they saw my incubators.. lol

nope...

for the humidity.. forget the hygrometer.. go by the air cell size during incubation
if the air cells get too big too fast THEN add moisture.. if they are staying too small.. decrease the humidity.. forget about percentages during incubation since hygrometers are known to be off many times.. plus your relative humidity will change depending on the season and what's going on in your home.. not to mention fan placement in forced air bators and shell porosity

so let the eggs tell you what THEY need.. and go by that

as for the temperature drop.. everything but small quail eggs and some parrots benefit from a slight drop in temp during hatch
