Turkey Talk for 2014

I've seen mixed reviews also. I cannot say I would have had different results if I didn't use the cartons, only that I hatched 100+ chicks and poults this year, and I was very happy with how it worked out and see no reason not to continue. (Also - I use a cabinet incubator that stands the eggs up during incubation, so I decided to keep mine standing up for hatching also.)

Basically what I do as well, though with a smaller bator

I find it really helps with the turkeys and ducks to be standing up/angled up rather than lying on their sides. It definitely helps prevent the hatched to knock them around and cause drownings

Have definitely had higher hatch rates since I started doing it that way

Good luck on your hatch TattooedMomma!

Thanks @chickadoodles & everyone else for all the good luck coming my way. This is my first ever turkey hatch and very exciting.

On another note. Does anyone have or know of anyone with black/black spanish turkeys? I know they are referred to as both. I'm going to post on the BST section but I know not everyone looks there. Found one breeder locally and their hens just stopped laying

My hubby wants some and I'm all in favor as they are on the livestock conservancy list though the breed is listed as watch and when you click on the link for the name, it states they are critical which is confusing. Any ideas which is the correct status?

So, my lame/gimpy turkey that I posted about a couple weeks back doesn't seem to be showing any signs of improvement. He has actually regressed and now only uses his lame leg for balance. In addition, my other 3 are growing at a much more rapid rate.

I have confirmed that it isn't bumble foot. I couldn't tell any real difference in the gimpy foot/leg until the past couple days. It seems to be turning in and becoming a bit pigeon toed. Anyone have any good ideas? I don't have any poultry vets within a reasonable distance to take him to.

Any help, ideas, etc would be greatly appreciated.

Is he a pet? If he's a pet maybe you could find a cat/dog vet to look at him and prescribe some Metacam. I have a bird vet that I use, but I know my dog/cat vet would be up to seeing a turkey and helping.
