Turkeys For 2013

I won't do the toe punch either. I refuse to hurt them in any way, except for killing them in the quickest way possible. While they're living here, they are treated with the same respect as people. That's part of why I started raising my own, to prevent my family helping the abuse/neglect of commercial animals for food. Animals DO feel pain. I'm no animal rights nut, but I fully believe that animals deserve the same respect. When I die, I certainly don't want to be tortured first. I want a good life before I'm sh*t-canned, lol. So, I treat the animals the same.

These are the breed I have

, too! But I have noticed, since Kuntrygirl brought it up, that some are all light, while some have a slighty darker color on ntheir heads, when they hatch. When I get to keep a few for myself, I will try to band them and see how they grow out and the poults I sell, I will try to make sure to include some of each in every order, and ask the buyers to let me know what sex they grow up to be!!! DH, who is always telling me thatI am getting carried away, wants to increase from 13 hens for breeding, to 40 or 50!!!LOL Turkeys sure are addictive and I think he has it bad!!!!

Just feeling this makes me feel cold, Brrrrr! It is a wonderful sunny day and 68 degrees here, right now and later this week, it will top out at 77 degrees for our high. I sure hope we don't get a sudden freeze in February!!!!

I'm not sure how accurate their count is. I bought three packs. I ended up with fifteen each of the four different colors of the large ties. That's 20 large per pack, not 28. I wasn't counting all those tiny ties though! Still, for $1.06, way worth it, just buy an extra pack if you're close to their calculation of necessary ties in any color.
Here is a pic of the zip ties that are sold at the Dollar Tree. You get 100 zip ties for $1.00. I forgot to take a pic last night of mine. This is a pic from their website.
1000

Yes you are right.

If anyone wants some of these zip ties and don't have a Dollar Tree in your area, PM me and let me know and I can pick some up for you and mail them out.

Lol. Next week is supposed to be nice. The past few days have been dreadful. Cold enough that my finger actually froze stuck to the combo lock on the bird room. That freaked me out a smidge. The birds are locked up,too cold for them to come out.

Beautiful poults! :love I do see some lighter poults. That is a good idea including some in each other and having the buyers let you know about the sex. 40 to 50 hens !!!!??????????????? Let me know how that works for you. :lau

Same here. I"m looking forward to the 78 degree weekend over here. I will be cleaning out the sheep pen and preparing for my NPIP on Monday morning. Not much to do since I did a lot of work that weekend I was telling ya'll about on the Louisiana thread. :/

Don't say the freeze word.

The larger one looks like the ones I have, but in a plastic bag, on sale all the time for $1.50 for 100 at Harbor Freight Tools in Baton Rouge.Same colors probably. They have other colors too including white and clear, big rows of all different sizes and colors and some assorted, that's what I bought!

I put on the zip ties right out of the incubator, you have to keep an eye on them as they grow and change them out a few times. One thing we never do is sell any birds, chicks etc banded like that because I always worry about people not checking the bands. I usually just use clear zip ties when they first hatch because you can get them small size about 4 inches long and the poults don't seem to notice they are there - the colored ties will catch their eye and sometimes they will peck at them.

Toe punches and wing bands do work but you have to run the bird down and catch it to see what you have. I always liked the bands because you can tell who is who just by looking.
