U.S. drought fallout . . . might it affect all of our ducks?

My rep was on the road when he phoned me. I will be calling him tomorrow since today is a holiday as a follow up to my email. Will let you know what he shares. If you have questions post them here and I will ask him those as well and report answers. My feed store is amazing when i raise concerns and they got the rep to call me within 10 minutes of me calling in saying I was worried.

I'm sure you'll ask the right question C, My biggest concern is the Aflaxtoxin in the corn this year. I have never had any problems with using FR and hope I can continue using it. Just want my flock to be safe. As does everyone else.

I'm still waiting on Purina...

do you think their ignoring me? My dh is stopping by to buy a 50lb bag of FR today, I'm am anxious to hear how high it is this week.
I am still waiting on a reply from Albers feed. I emailed them about this and they haven't sent back any reply to any of my questions or concerns. Albers is the other company I use for the things/times I don't get Payback feed. Doesn't really fill me with confidence when they don't reply to questions like this...

I wonder if they are, in turn, having a hard time getting answers from their suppliers. . . .dominoes.

Lydia, per the rep they (purina) will not changing their standards to allow the higher content just because the FDA says it is safe. I am asking a ton of questions beyond that, so will share when i talk to him.

Just received the following response from Scratch and Peck. While this is helpful mostly to folks here in the west, notice the information on buying clubs:

Thanks for getting this info!

Hmmm....I think it's odd that they don't have a testing procedure for the grains coming in. So they are just trusting their suppliers?!? I hope they will implement some sort of quality control procedures, because I was thinking they would be a good alternative to Excel feeds in Tacoma. They're reply doesn't give me a lot of confidence in the safety of their feed, though.

"Hello JoyAnna,
Thanks for writing. The corn we are currently using in our feeds is from a farm in Othello, WA and is actually last year’s crop, so even though we did not test that lot we have no reason to believe it was contaminated with aflaxotin. I will have it tested now to ease any fears and can report back to you upon receipt of the findings. When this year’s crop is ready – sometime later this month – we will have it tested prior to bringing it into the mill.

Because we are a small facility and know most of the farmers that supply us with grains we have a much higher sense of confidence and security and a much easier time identifying issues than say a huge facility that handles train loads of grain from many different growers and areas across the country.

I hope this answer is satisfactory for you and your group. I do want to point out that we are not yet “certified” organic but as you know we use only organic grains.

Thanks again for reaching out and for your support. We sure do appreciate it!

This response says a heap about the integrity of this small company. I have been to the mill, met some of the staff and get such a good feeling about how they are doing business.

Also, we should all be pleased and proud that we are making a difference and bringing the problem and our concerns to the attention of some who might not otherwise give it a second thought.

I am also grateful to everyone for pitching in to look at this and think together about how to provide for our ducks. Makes me also think about providing better for myself with what is available closer to home.

I have seen that trouble comes in many different forms to different parts of the country. Some weather forecasters are seeing indications that the northeast U.S. will be in for some extreme weather this winter. May we all be blessed with wisdom and strength, and resilience.
Hush Amiga!!!!! The gods are listening! Be careful what you say! Lol, I agree with you all the way. The wild animals are acting as if it
s November already. The paper wasps built their hives 15' up in the trees. It doesn't bode well that
s for sure.

I just paid $19.00 for one yesterday. The place that sells Blue Seal was closed by the time I came up for air.
