U.S. drought fallout . . . might it affect all of our ducks?

You know, the mealworms used to creep me out too. My family thought I had lost my marbles when I ordered them. I started with 2,000 in February in one of the large sized 3 drawer plastic storage things: I now have 3 of those storage units and two 10 gallon rough totes. I keep a box of latex gloves on top of one of the containers for when I need to root around in the bedding. If I am just grabbing a couple worms for my favorite rooster, Chico my Barnevelder, I just grab them. I got over being squeamish pretty quickly after getting them: They really aren't all that bad.

My wonderful husband is building me a new coop for turkeys and geese. He is putting in a completely secure (rodent proof) insulated feed room: Mainly to get the pallets of feed out of his garage I think, but I'll take it whatever the reason behind it.

We are going to move the mealworms out there and when I do...I am going to expand the system and add a couple more drawer units. They reproduce better when kept warm, so with our mild winters a couple 75 watt light bulbs ought to keep enough of the chill off them. Unless they are in beetle stage (these beetles don't fly...only live for up to 3 months), I feed between 3,000-10,000 a week to the birds. The chickens even enjoy the dead beetles and all come running when they see the little white bucket that I only use for the worms/beetles.

Where did you order them from? I think I'm going to do this - or maybe let my daughter do this.

GrubCo. had the best prices I could find when factoring in shipping to my location: AND I always factor in shipping. I think the total with shipping was $21 for 2,000 large worms. They all arrived alive and active and looking good considering they were yucky worms.

I have also ordered some just to feed to the chickens with my yearly cricket shipment from Armstrong's cricket farm here in Louisiana. They were okay, but not nearly as large or robust as the GrubCo ones.

Good luck.

Purina just emailed me a coupon, which they say I am allowed to share: It is for $3.00 off on a bag of Layena Plus Omega-3 or Layena Sunfresh Recipe. Didn't know if anyone would be interested.

Thanks for sharing the coupon, Mrs Magoo! I have read this entire thread with great interest. I live in a really small town and have to drive over 20 miles to get to a TSC. There is a feed mill in Nacogdoches that is supposed to be good, so I think I will look into what they offer and how they test their corn. Thanks to everybody for all this constructive advice!!

Thanks. I know, they gross me out. My daughter's first grade class raised them to learn about their life cycle, then they got to bring their beetle home. Her beetle came to a sad end, though, when my dog ate it along with the oatmeal it was living in. The neighbors probably heard her scream, "MOMMMM! OLIVER ATE ROSIE!!!!" Lots of tears.

sorry that just struck me funny, can you imagine what they must have thought.

Thanks for a very interesting thread!!! I had been looking into switching my ducks and geese to whole grains and decided to take the plunge! I ordered large bags of Fertrell supplement products to add to my whole grains. I had to buy 50# bags of each and don't really need that much at a time. If anybody is interested in smaller quantities of Poultry Nutri-Balancer, Aragonite, or Fish Meal; please PM me! I'm not looking to make money, I just don't want it sitting around or go bad!

I'm way to far away but how do you find out the prices of their products. When I go on the link it doesn't say?

I contacted several of the feed mills and feed supply companies near me that were listed on the Fertrell website. Just put your zip code into the "contact a dealer". I found that even if they just carry lawn care products, they can still order the poultry supplements without a problem.

OMG.....while that must have been traumatic for your daughter, I could not help but giggle.
