I've just had some terrible news. A very good friend of mine has had one of his horses die. With all the fireworks, someone had let off some airbombs next to his field. His horse panicked and stressed so much it twisted its guts. The vet had been out with him all night but sadly he died. The horse was 18 and called Eddie. My friend had him from a foal. He and his daughter are absolutely devasted. They don't know if the fireworks were from someone's house or kids messing around. Either way, why can these types of fireworks be purchased? Keep them to organised displays. They shouldn't have them for garden parties. A few moments of 'fun' have caused so much heartache and pain.

Oh no the poor guy & horse. Unfortunately I’ve read a few stories of this happening to horses & other animals.

Had my own panic on Monday when an idiot neighbour let one off just after 4pm in daylight & Kitty the cat ran away as she hadn’t quite finished her T.

Ohh my gosh this is awful, I am so sorry to hear this.
I tried calling the police on nearby neighbours who set off approx 10-15 fireworks all at the same time, a few times over, noise was such that even my grandson was petrified and still jumps at sudden noises, - fall out from the fireworks showered my garden onto my run, could hear the debris hitting the tarpaulin, it was hard plastic, my daughter and I believe they may have been show fireworks, (which are illegal in residential settings) they were so much louder than usual back garden fireworks plus all the debris is plastic - hard shards of plastic - where as debris from other neighbours fireworks are cardboard. Calling the police was useless, they are powerless to do anything, as they were let off within the allowed times and we had no proof of them being show fireworks. We took my grandson to an organised event held at a local school situated in the "middle of nowhere" even these fireworks weren't as bright nor as loud as the nearby neighbours, which I believe were worse because they were letting them off at the same time. Thankfully my birds survived it, but my hen has stopped laying, not that I care about eggs, just is I suspect its the stress of the fireworks, and all my birds are unusually nervous and "jumpy" . My daughter and I have signed this online petition, please - if you have the time, please give it a look and consider signing it.

My hen is laying again, although she's had a hard time of it. Thankfully my birds seem to be back to their normal selves now all has quietened down, just hoping that's the end of fireworks this year - we have decided we are going to sleep them indoors with us on New Years, there are usually a lot of fireworks then anyway but with these new neighbours doing what they did, we don't want to take any chances.

I'm glad that your kitty cat turned up safe and sound @Yorkshire Coop. My mum has a dog that is terrified of bangs. He goes crazy even in the house with the bangs. There has been alot of incidents involving horses on fb. I really wish people could be more considerate. But unfortunately people without animals tend not to be as aware. I went to Yorkshire wildlife park a year or two back for a Halloween firework display. Not one firework banged or made any noise. If they can do it. There should be more control. They are explosives after all!

Thanks & me too! I got her in early again today just incase but touch wood I have heard nothing tonight.

Pretty fortunate here with the dogs as Mac now seems to be too deaf & old to bother about them. He wasn’t keen on them though when he was younger. Keeper thought it was time to go shooting/working as the bangs went off. He was stood out in the garden watching them with great interest thinking where was the bird to pick up.

Wildlife park is not too far away from me. Didn’t realise they did things like that there. Sounds a nice display and quiet for the animals.

Gun dogs are great! We used to breed clumber spaniels and we've had a few springers too. They do go into work mode when they hear the bangs!
We got the tickets from Groupon for Yorkshire wildlife. It can be a bit pricey otherwise. It was a great day out. There is a walk through an enclosure and it is full of lemurs! They come up to you! It's well worth a visit!

Hello, thought I would introduce myself. I’m English but now live is SW France. I have three hens, started with four in July 2017 but one died of cancer.
Crash course in dealing with severe chicken injuries when our delightful neighbour (not) got a new young dog. Have an Omlet cube with a two metre walk in run plus a smaller Omlet Go when we had to nurse the hens back to health in our hall.
Our hens are going through various stages of moulting, one of which is turning into a right diva! Other fun is the very big hen that can’t jump up into the cube and won’t walk up the ladder like the others. After a couple of months of trying to catch her and then put her in the cube we now have her trained to go to bed on her own in the Go. It’s got extra insulation jackets so she should stay warm.
Hello SW31:frow
Where in France are you?
