UK Member Please Say HI

I'm sure the dry and draft free shed will be most appreciated by Dave, as you say it may perk him up.

:fl no winter ailments for the birds! All seem to be doing ok right now. They only came out for food and water today before heading back into their coops. A bit cold, wet and windy for them today. Molting in this weather seems totally crazy to me!

Harry horse has been under the weather I'm afraid :( He was anaemic, getting over a virus/infection when I got the vet to run some blood tests. He also has a heart murmur which has got worse. In general he is feeling his age all of a sudden, he's quiet compared to his usual self.

Aw no! How old is he? Poor soul, I hope he picks up soon. Not nice seeing them unwell.
I'm glad your flock haven't gone through anything yet, a couple of mine are sneezing but nothing too much to worry about I don't think.

He's 20 years old so not really old but it seems to have caught up him really quick. He was a race horse though so was broken in as a yearling and raced aged 2. It's a lot in my book for young bones to take. He's happy enough though right now and still eating and drinking well but just lost his spark that thoroughbreds tend to have.

Hi. Yes. It's all very exciting. I think they'll start laying about March time. I'm going to have to start selling or I'll be inundated with eggs lol.

Nice to meet you,
Sarah

Good idea, I sell my extra eggs in the summer. It's nice to have a few extra pennies to put back into the feed pot.

I'm not very good at this forum lark lol. Sorry for the quoting mistakes.

Hey don't worry, we were all new once. Once you have been here a while you will soon pick it all up :highfive:

Bless him...I don't know anything about horses I'm afraid, but I can only imagine he must be getting tired if he used to race! How old do horses usually live to? I would've thought 20 was a rather good age for a horse! I hope he starts picking up for you again soon, cold weather can't be helping his mood much.

Hey stranger :frow I was only thinking about you the other day and was wondering where you had gotten to :idunno
I can just imagine Aiyla keeping you busy! Bet she is trying to get into everything now!

I'm afraid I'm no good with ducks but I'm sure he will appreciate a clean up and being indoors. Can't ducks get niacin deficiency? Would that affect legs and cause lameness?

Hello, from not-so-sunny Milton Keynes. The rain hasn't made getting everything ready much fun, but it'll be worth it.

Expecting our first 4 chucks tomorrow. We're very excited.

It's good to see so many other UK peeps to help with sourcing local info.

Hellooo! First post on this thread and hopefully it'll prove to be successful!

my ducks have been loving the rain but our garden is beginning to look like a mud bath

Does anybody make/ know where I could buy duck nappies?! I miss spending my evenings in the garden with the girls now that it's dark but I don't want poo stains in the house.
I'm struggling to find any uk based sellers as I guess pet ducks are pretty rare over here!
They'd love a few hours in the house every evening! Any help would be amazing, thank you xx

@Avialle

Hi and welcome

Good luck getting your girls (I was going to say... tomorrow, but I guess it's later today now

) What breed(s) are you getting and how old? Waiting for that first egg is a killer, so hope they are point of lay or mature laying hens to save you too much anticipation. We love photos so feel free to take some and post them once you get them settled in.
Hope it all goes smoothly.

Best wishes

Barbara

@GGBEAR

Good to hear from you and that Aiyla is keeping you on your toes. I'm sure it must be time you posted some more photos of her, she has such a happy face.

Excellent suggestion from Kim re Niacin. I don't know anything about ducks (apart from that they taste good

.....and they make a mess....oh and drakes have unusually large appendages

) but seem to recall reading on here about niacin deficiency in ducks causing lameness., now that Kim mentions it..... it's always easy to remember things when someone else jogs your memory! Hope he is now clean and warm and dry and feeling a bit better. Sounds like you and @RascalAndJemima might be in the same boat, needing duck nappies!
How are your other chucks doing? Are you getting any eggs or going through a dry spell like Kim and I whilst they moult?....Talking of dry spell, I would be rather happy to have one that related to weather rather than egg production!

Don't be away so long next time....we miss you.

Best wishes

Barbara

@RascalAndJemima

Hi and welcome to the thread.

Unfortunately I can't help you with information regarding duck nappies but I would be surprised if there is not a You Tube video of how to make your own DIY ones..... you can learn to do almost anything via You Tube! I'm guessing your drake is called Rascal. I hope he is not as troublesome as my horse of the same name! He can get into places that a draught couldn't. The minute I don't give him my full attention he is into mischief!

Anyway, just wanted to say hello and wish you well.

Regards

Barbara
