How many chooks have you got @Anna Ranieri just asking as I have only just replaced my 5kg 2kg bag after over 6 months - that has been for up to 5 layers. If it is easier getting a smaller bag, they honestly use so little!
I got 4 chickens but only one laying so far, and I got 2 female ducks not laying yet either but they will also need it when the do. I want a big bag because I don't drive and live quite a way from town, so need to rely on others for a lift, so its easier for me to bulk buy.

Sounds the ideal gift! I love practical gifts! Like wheel barrows, yard brushes, coops, runs..... I would even be happy if I received chicken food or shavings for Christmas or birthday. At least I know they are going to used.
Brilliant idea - I'm going to put chicken/duck stuff on my christmas and birthday list - would help a lot and at 55 there isn't really anything else I need, so would be much more productive and useful to have items for my birds.

Might be a dumb question but, does the oyster shells have a use by date? I just thinking if they do it wouldn't be worth my while getting a big one if they going to run out of date before I can use them.
You made me think there! I've just had a look and I didn't see a use by date just a produced on date! So I think it'll be safe for a while! One thing I also did was buy another bag of mixed grit and shell and add extra shell to the one with grit.

That's a good idea! I already have and am using mixed grit, but noticed the amount of oyster shell is tiny compared to the actual grit, which is why I want just oyster shell. The mixed grit is enough for now as only one of mine is laying but I have two pullets and two ducks coming up to POL and want to make sure I have everything I need for when they do lay. I just like to be prepared.

:thumbsup Exactly my thoughts. I’m not into fancy clothes, shoes or jewellery. Things for my birds or Harry horse are much more appreciated. This birthday just gone my other half bought all the wood and made some proper run roofs for me

Something strange is going on with my hens. I have two coops and runs connected by a open run surrounded by my neighbours fences. For the past couple of days my hens won't come out. The weather has changed and its a bit colder but they all stay in one run. They won't go near one of my neighbours fences and run to get from one run to the other. When I went in this morning none of them would come near me. Snowy, who always comes for a cuddle made a concerted effort to avoid me. I'm not sure what's going on. I have ordered a trail cam from amazon that should be here tomorrow. I'm hoping that nothing is going on regarding my neighbours but I have had stones thrown over before.

Oh no, that does sound odd. I do hope your neighbours aren't doing anything unkind :( Have they got a dog?

Certainly sounds suspicious....it will be interesting to see what's going on. No signs of predators digging or anything like that?
