Unemployment almost 10% nationally

Personally I have more of a problem with 50% of the people not paying any taxes than I do raising tax rates on those that already share the bulk of the burden.

Income disparity Q9... The top 20% have 90% of the financial wealth in this country... I see nothing silly about having higher taxes on the wealthiest 20%, and reinvesting that money right back into the economy. It works very well in Scandinavian countries, where folks are well educated, and healthy...
Yet small and big business thrive, and people are still motivated to work and excel.

ON

Well I worked 2 jobs or 70 hr or more a week...to get what I have, then the goverment wants to tax me higher ,and give it out to those that don't even work or pay for their health care. Have no problem helping the needed...........but why should I have to pay for the unemploy for 2 yrs ,because they don't want to work a lower paying job....ever hear those people say "I can made more than that on unemployment" when offer a job making 10.00 an hour. I have.

fair tax everyone the same ...flat tax % for everyone, the more u make ,still more you pay.....like that crazy earn income credit crap. people getting more of a refund than was with held....

anyway sure happy the way Ohio election came out....lot of other people like me sick and tired of all this tax and spend...

It's easy to fix.
Rescind child tax credits and tax cuts for those earning less than $250K/yr ... wa-la more people will pay taxes. Better solution is to stop outsourcing jobs and eliminate tax cuts for corporations outsourcing jobs.

Someone wrote:
"I'm for a flat tax rate too.
10% is 10% regardless if you make $3,000 a year, $30,000 a year or $300,000 a year."

A better solution is a transaction tax on "ALL" financial transactions including stock speculation which drove the price of oil to $140/barrel and did not produce a drop of new oil.

I think it is funny that everyone sits around complaining about the economy and how there are no jobs, but I know for a fact that there are hundreds of jobs in my area. The problem is that no one is willing to leave their comfort zone to actually go and get a job. Yes moving across the country and leaving all that you know behind is hard, but I don't think it is as hard as waiting for the government to extend your unemployment. If you are willing to take the risk the opportunities will amaze you. My husband and I just moved a thousand miles from home (again) because his pay got lowered and we knew that it wasn't going to cut it for us. So before we were completely down to our last penny we took off with our two young kids, dogs and fish and went where the work was.

I am not saying it is easy because it's not, but knowing that my kids will never have to go without and we will have a secure financial future means a lot more to us than living down the street from our Mommy and Daddy. Not to mention we get to decide if our kids are raised by me or by a day care or a mixture of both, it is not a decision that is made by the bill collectors calling. Besides a plane ticket costs $300 - $500 that will get you almost anywhere in the country if you plan right. Trust me we could by a whole lot of plane tickets with the raise we got from moving to North Dakota.

So here is a heads up, north eastern/central North Dakota is booming. North East Montana is booming. Cheyenne Wyoming and Casper Wyoming are on the verge of booming. I am not going to say that they will boom forever but they are where the money is right now. So put your big kid undies on, get on the job posting sites for these areas and find yourself some money. Oh and all of these states are predominentally rural and chickens fit in very well.

BTW my husband could still use 10 entry level workers and a diesel mechanic so check out this thread:

It would be terribly hard for a homeowner on either coast to pick up and move to North Dakota or Wyoming. Who is going to help them get out of a $400,000 mortgage on a house that is now only worth $275,000? Or the $275,000 mortgage on a house now worth $175,000. Do you give up the idea of owning a home completely to get out of the bad situation?

I completely understand where you are coming from we still have a house in WY (not the booming part of WY unfortunately) sitting on the market. Our house took a hit in the markets decline just like everyone elses, we paid $340,00 and now our realtor is begging us to list it for $275,000. It is however not impossible to rent a suitable house while you sit out the housing market decline. I know of lots of families our included that are keeping more money in their pockets even while they are paying rent and a mortgage or 2 mortgages like my husband and I are. I don't see how staying in one place and watching your savings dwindle and your unemployment benefits clock tick is any easier then letting your house sit on the market vacant. I realize that this is not practical for everyone becuse of credit issues, but if you are very diligent with your credit it is possible. It is obviously not the right solution for everyone, but I have a hard time believing that every single person who has spent the last 6mos to a year on unemployment has explored every possible solution to their dilemma.

"they pay $14-$16 an hour to start out" equals $29,120 - $33,280/Yr, certainly not middle class paying jobs by today's standards. In fact these people will join the much maligned 47% of Americans unable to pay federal income taxes because they do not earn enough money.
At $14-$16/hr a family wouldn't be able to buy a new 4x4 to drive through winter snow or spring mud, buy a home and certainly will not be able to afford to send their children to college. All the states you mention are welfare states, receive more from the federal government than they pay in income taxes. Do the jobs include health care?

The real question is why did your husband have to take a pay cut? Was his company not making a profit? Or, did the company need more money to pay larger salaries to top officers.

Mom'sfolly asked: "Do you give up the idea of owning a home completely to get out of the bad situation?"

The only option for many would be to give their house back to the bank which would destroy their credit and of course require another TARP bailout for banks. So yes, the U.S. is moving back to a culture of renters.

Finally, are these jobs available/suitable for 50-65 year old unemployed men and women?

Up until last year we made $32k annually... since my husbands lay off, minor help from unemployment (which we lose in Janurary) we will be making around $20k. What family of 3 can live off of that! And my husband STUBBORN, he does not like asking for help... he's not too proud to take a job someone will look down their nose at. He will work 10 hours of back breaking labor for $50.

My mother has practicially begged for a job... she's willing to work for $8 an hour if need be because her unemployment ended. She currently is living with electricity. I buy her propane to heat her house because my father, sister and my 2 nephews live there too. They come to my house to shower. They're household income is $1000 a month because the state is garnishing my father's wages for not being able to pay their taxes for the last 2 years. My parents are in their 60's and no one ...I mean NO ONE will hire people that old at this point. She's not had 1 call back for work in over a year since she got laid off. They have no retirement funds... no anything! She's at the point I am making her file for disability because she was hit by a truck last month, and his insurance won't pay her medical bills.

I did get in touch with her and get her to goto her church, today he electricity will be turned back on thanks to the giving people of her parish. However, they did it for SO many people because of the way things are, they are limited to $200 per household max for the entire year. It is breaking my heart! I can't do a thing for them, I've already gone above and beyond my ability... right now, I have my own husband and child to feed. And I work from home, help people out part time and now offer classes on the weekends to make a difference in our budget.

It needs to be extended... long as 90% of that 10% unemployed is looking and struggling... they need extensions!!!

Could you promise me if I up and move to your area, someone will buy my house? Will that job pay me enough to afford the move... will their be a house/apartment or living space there I can afford for what they pay? Is there a contract that assures while we settle in to a life for a year or 2 that position is guarenteed to not be ripped away from me and given to someone else.

If this went horribly/horribly wrong here... I do have the comfort (though it is not comfortable) that I may be able to move in with a friend or family member to give us a couple months to get back on our feet. If I went to ND, if something went bad, it would costs $100's of dollars to have failed and travel to where we could find shelter.
