Update: crop surgery with graphic photos

Pics
Wow that was an experience!! I will upload all the pictures! So she seems to be recovering well, Im guessing her problem was a very advanced sour crop? As soon as I opened it was overwhelmingly sour smelling and so much white liquid like a paste along with chunks also a tonne of hay and food etc. (I use the straw boss hay for bedding its like mulched hay very small pieces) Im not sure if the hay was impacting her? I scooped it all out and Irrigated and washed the site as well as I could I'm worried about infection. She was an ANGEL I have no idea how she endured that with hardly a peep, it had to have helped that I hand raised her. I tried to take as many pictures as I could while keeping everything completely sterile so some of the middle part of the surgery I wasn't able to document. Thanks so much for all the support I just hope my girl pulls through. After the surgery she had a big water poop, followed by a chunky poop she hasn't pooped anything but water in a long while. SO I am hoping that is a good sign. @azygous should I be thinking about giving her an antibiotic for infection?

Bravo! You are my hero! And your plucky assistant, too! That sweet little hen looks like she came through with flying colors! No, do not worry about infection as long as you cleansed the incisions well and doused them with alcohol or Betadine. The crop has built-in infection resistance. But at the first sign of redness around the incision, do start her on an antibiotic.

That bowl full of crop material you dragged out of her sure does answer why she wasn't responding to her crop treatment. You made an excellent judgement call to do this surgery. You probably saved her life. That straw is very hard to clear out of a clogged crop without resorting to surgery. I'm so glad you were courageous enough to do it. Grasses make up most of crop impactions, by the way.

The photos are superb! What an educational thread you have made. I suggest you contact the mods (just click on "report" under the first post you made.) and have them help you alter the title to your thread to include "Update: crop surgery with graphic photos". That way it will come up on Google searches when people need this very specific information and guidance.

Again, well done! You are awesome!
