You should just be spraying it real good twice a day with sterile saline solution. It won't hurt her. It's the same as tears, perfectly natural. Pat it dry gently with a clean towel, not cotton balls. Cotton balls will stick to her skin and will hurt when the fibers are pulled off. Then gently coat with the triple antibiotic ointment, like Neosporin. Make sure it's Neosporin ORIGINAL and does not say With Pain Reliever on it. Pain Reliever is toxic to chickens. And that's all! Don't wrap it or cover it. I'm not sure what that yellow is on her skin. Let me ask the Educators, okay?

As for the honey, your mom's right that it can be very healing but I don't think it's necessary at this stage, as it's almost completely healed already. Manuka honey is best, it's medicinal but very expensive. Also honey works best if you put it on a dressing then apply the dressing to the wound - and chickens are notoriously uncooperative about leaving dressings in place!

The Neosporin will protect it and keep it moist, no need to cover it. It needs air. I think the yellow will go away if you stop covering it. I also think in about three days you can just stop treating it, the skin is completely replaced, it looks like to me. It's just a little tender but that's to be expected. The wound is closed.

Sounds good. Thanks so much for catching that.

Thank you so much for all the advice. I will do just that. So grateful!

You're welcome. I had a hen get attacked by a dog. Sure thought I was going to have to put her down. But the advice and wisdom of the great minds here fixed her up and pulled her through, and now I'm glad to be able to pass that experience on to you. Just always listen to your chicken. If they say something hurts, don't do it if you don't have to. They're amazingly resilient and survive some seemingly horrific things with a little help. Best wishes going forward! ❤️

Im so glad to hear that. I know— this community has been pretty life changing.
Thank you! You, too!

I think the wound looks pretty good. It doesn’t look like infection. I would continue spraying on saline, and then apply Neosporin twice daily. The yellow can be traces of her yellow fat layer if you notice the edges. Good advice from Big Blue Hen.
