(UPDATE!!) Red not getting better * PSU Replied!

Any other input would be greatly appreciated... Not that chkn's input was bad becauce it wasn't I'd just like to see what other people think also..

I made her the mash that she loves but this time I put some DE in it also. I also hard boiled some eggs for me and the kids and RED. She loved the center part of the egg, gobbled it right up. Any other suggestions? I have some zuccini here that I guess I could cut up if someone thinks it would do something for her..?

Just saw and read this thread from start to finish.
I'm sorry Red has had such a rough time of it. You care so much about her and I'm sure she knows it.

I'm not sure what's got her to the point of not moving - very serious of course. Hoping it's just general weakness from parasites and that she will rally.

Can you advise what her regular diet is? Is she eating any nutritionally complete foods for chickens? (not sure what's in the 'mash' that you mention)

I would suggest bolstering her nutritionally as much as possible. You can order Avia Charge 2000 on line and mix a bit with her water every day (to light iced tea color). It has a wide range of nutrients; my birds have been on it for years and years and I have a roo that is still thriving at what must be going on 10 years one of these days soon. One jar of Avia Charge will last a really long time kept in a cool dry place. Some people use a product called Rooster Booster - that may be good too, also may have to be ordered on line. I haven't used that one. If you order either, while waiting for product to arrive you can see if she'll take baby parrot feeding formula, also highly concentrated nutrition - this is available at well stocked pet supply stores. Also in a pinch, and while waiting for Avia, can give 3 drops Polyvisol liquid children's vitamins daily, applied via dropper gently along her beak line so she swallows on her own and doesn't choke. The stuff tastes like crud so I would follow with some tasty treat that she likes, e.g. a couple of cut up blueberries.

Nothing wrong with zucchini - just not that valuable nutritionally.

I would be careful about dosing her with too much in the way of chemicals because she is so comprised. Treat the lice certainly. And the basics needed to worm her and no more (lost track of what you already gave her). I like Bagbalm better than Vaseline for the legs - it's incredibly healing but what you're doing should also work.

Not sure if I read whether or not there were surface wounds (or just bruising kind of look) and whether you're using neosporin on them but that is an option.

Needless to say, and I'm sure you're already doing this, she needs to be in a comfy (not too hot, not too cold) quiet room with her creature comforts close at hand...

A vet could help pin this down if an option. If you need/would like an alternate option, there is a person who is a wealth of info and he can consult by phone. Name is Peter Brown at First State Vet Suply (http://www.firststatevetsupply.com/). Should you end up ordering recommended meds or other from First State, the consult fee of $25 can be waived.

I hope very much she'll recover. Sending many many good wishes for both of you

Thank you very much jjthink for your reply. The concern that people show here is so amazing!
I always have layer rations avalable for all of my chickens, and oyster shells, I also give my birds some Manna Pro Poultry Conditioner pellets. They get treats of my yogurt mash which consists of layer feed, Manna Pro, yogurt, and some water all mixed together, on occasion(sp) now I'll put some DE in with it. I also give fruits and veggie treats, and cooked eggs. I have not tried the cheese yet although many say their chickens love it. For her parasites, I have not yet gotten a dewormer, my car was just fixed lastnight (thank you hubby!) I am going to go out and get some today. I have as I mentioned before given her a bath in Dawn dish soap and dusted her well with DE. I have two "sick pens" in my main coop where others cannot bother anyone who is in them. Red is in the top one, that way I know she is left alone. My "sick pens" are about 3'w x 2'd x 2'h They give them enough room to move around some but also are small enough that they have to rest alot. Thank you for the suggestion of the avia charge 2000 I will try to get some. I have also been putting a vitamin/electrolyte solution in her water. I hope this helps to answer some of your questions. And I hope you might have more suggestions. I considder everything that everyone says and suggests.

Hey, I think you should ask Dawg about this BECAUSE normally people here recommend to do a round of Wazine before Ivermectin. With Ivermectin, I've heard there's risk of a mass die off that can kill a chicken. I just wonder if that's really true though. They say the Wazine kills the adult worms and then you follow up with Ivermectin to kill the rest a week later. I think you should ask Dawg's opinion.

With Valbazen, Dawg says it kills over the course of several days. It kills more parasites than the Ivermectin. Ivermectin kills quickly so it could be a little more of a hazard. Valbazen is easier to overdose though whereas Ivermectin has a little more wiggle room. I guess I'm wondering if it's safe to go ahead because the only common parasites I can think of are the round worms and the tape worms and Ivermectin won't kill tapes.

Anyway, there are some dosages listed around here somewhere. I use 6 drops for my adult RIR's which are considered a medium to large breed. I think the does goes roughly 3, 4, 5 and 6 drops, depending on the size. For my birds I put one drop behind the head, one or two on the saddle, one by the scent gland, one under each wing. I don't think it really matters where you put it as long as you put it on the skin somewhere.
