UPDATE! Sad News!

I have a total of 6 out now, (3 on their own, 3 assisted) and several more pipping! Mother in law called (she has 12 of my shipped eggs) and told me one hatched and died shortly after, but a little New Hampshire Red seems to be doing great!

I had one that did not make it and several more that are either out or partially out. For some reason they did not absorb the yolk all the way. There are 3 that are all the way out and two partially and appear to have some yolk left. The one that died had quite a bit sticking out. I have been doing so well hatching and now this. I don't know what could have changed except the weather changing and all the rain we have had?? There are 5 more that have not pipped yet. Can you tell me why some are lighter?? Just curious what that means if anything?

I'm sorry that one didn't make it, thats really strange as all of the babies we've hatched have been very strong and healthy... by lighter do you mean the color of the chick or the weight of the egg/chick?

Oh I am sure it is something wrong on my end, this crazy bator and our weather that changes every day. I have 6 so far that are chirping and look ok. So don't worry. I just appreciate you swapping with me. Have you candled the eggs from me yet, I may have asked you that already??? And yes by lighter I meant the color. There is one in there that is light almost a silver color? No color on the front of the legs. The others I can see have some blackish on the front of the legs and are much darker colored?

So thats good, only one cockeral so far. The boys will be light silvery grey and the girls either darker grey or black. Also boys won't have the dark color on the front of their legs like the girls do. I tried candling the eggs tonight but the light I have wasn't strong enough

This sure is a lot of work - But it's worth it, isnt it? I cant wait to see pics of those silkies, they sound beautiful!

Silkieluvr - what colors are they going to be when they are grown up? Can you really tell boys from girls this young, by color? Thats Cool!

The chicks are bantam barred rocks and you can tell boys from girls from the time they are born, that is one reason I find the breed so interesting! They are a lot of fun too

Well, I have 6 alive and two died and 2 never hatched. I opened them up and they were fully formed and dead. Don't know what happened. One of the ones that died was very light. I have some pics if I can get them uploaded. The rest appear to be darker but who knows until they dry off right? I have switched them to a clean bator to dry off today and then will move them to the brooder tonight. There is lots of chirping going on that is for sure. One of them stil has the yolk protruding so I sort of made a diaper out of gauze to cover it until it goes in or whatever. Don't want it to rupture on the wire or someone to peck it. I have given them all a bit of electrolytes this morning to give them a little boost. Will be heading to work in a bit, so I pray they will be ok. My DH will come home at lunch to check on them and dip their beaks again. Keep your fingers crossed. They sure are cuties. Thanks alyssa. Hope everyone else is having some cheeping right now.

The little mille fleur from Peeps hatched last night, then I woke up to this this morning

A blue splash silkie and a white silkie from Melanie. The other mille fleur egg in that picture did not hatch out and was dead.

I had to assist all three of these, I need a new hygrometer... sigh. They have that junky dry membrane stuck to them on some parts.

Hi marie, from what happened it sounds like the humidity was a bit too high, I'll keep my fingers crossed for the remaining babies to grow up healthy and strong!
