Hooray!

Congrats on that hatch! Don't give up on the other and don't open that bator yet. You don't want to mess the others up if they are in the process of hatching. Sit on your hands Nina! Come on chicks! Come out! Come out!

No more pips, as of now

Do you think there's still hope? I know that they sometimes hatch late, but since one hatched this morning (pipped last night), wouldn't they all hatch around the same time?? I wonder if I should pip their air cells tonight and see if there's still life.

Don't worry, for now I will sit tight and take more pics of the (almost) fluffy one!

I'm getting ready to move it to the brooder.

Hey GK,
IMHO you should NOT touch the remaining eggs yet!
I'm still leaving my 3 unpipped eggs in that bator for AT LEAST 1 more day, thats 2 days post hatch. It's worth a try, and for the moment, you have one fuzzy butt who needs you to increase the odds on those remaining eggs!

If all else fails, you can hand raise this little guy/or gal...my mother hand raised a pet rooster who lived indoors with her when she was a girl in Cuba or find someone who has an extra chick you can buy/borrow/steal

Too bad your so far into NC your like a 5 hour drive... maybe we could meet halfway! LOL.. just kidding.. gas is horrid.. there MUST be somewhere to get a lonely chick near to you.

I do have to head to an area near Ft. Bragg sometime soon, maybe we could meet. Not that it helps your current situation, but I was just thinking out loud.

I contacted someone that posted they had banty chicks, 3 weeks old on Craigslist. She's just a few minutes away from me.

Would that work to put some 3 week olds in with the newborn? She has two that have been raised separately. She'll send pics later. Whatcha think? That might be what I have to do unless more start pipping soon.

I'm just scared that they are alive and just can't get out. I didn't help that one and lost it, I hate to think that I could be saving the others.

But I'll just open the bator for a sec to grab the chick and put it in the brooder. Won't touch the remaining eggs!

Can I say something here? I WOULD NOT PUT ANY CHICK IN WITH YOUR NEW CHICK UNLESS IT CAME FROM A HATCHERY!!! No craigslist chicks. All you are going to do there is ask for trouble. That's what happened here. We got a 6 day old bantam chick (from someone I trusted mind you) and it infected my whole flock of 50 with Infectious Coryza. It hit my newly hatched chicks the hardest and 5 of those died. My official death toll from it here has reached 16 so far. If you get some of those bantams then they need to be in quarantine totally away from your flock and chick for at a least a month, which wouldn't help your current situation. Try putting a mirror and stuffed animal in the brooder with the chick for company. Try calling around and see if any of your local feed stores have any hatchery chicks right now. If they don't, I wouldn't risk introducing your flock to anything from anywhere else. Just my 2 cents worth.

Hmm, that thought did cross my mind.

Is there anyway of knowing that they are "clean" by looking at her chickens? The mom of the eggs?
I am pretty scared of that. Gosh, this is turning into such a disappointment. All I wanted was at least two chicks, so they wouldn't be lonely and one didn't have to be raised alone. And now that's exactly what happened.

unless others will still pip!

Don't give up. My 2nd to last hatch took 3 days! I'm sorry the first one didn't make it. The one that made it will do fine. Just give it a stuffed animal, mirror, or sock and it will make a friend. I have a neighbor who only had one hatch and it loves it sock friend and lays on top of it. Then it will move in it's sleep and fall off!

It's not far down so the chick doesn't get hurt but, she said it is funny to watch.

I'm so sorry to be the bearer of bad news Nina, I'm just trying to save you from the heartache I've been through. This has been devastating. It goes deeper than just chicks or chickens dying. I can't have visitors that raise poultry in case they take something back to their farms, I've had to put my bator up until next spring (no more hatching)

, my chickens have had to remain in lockdown so they don't spread the disease, my daughter can't interact with her chickens like she normally does, my chickens are due to start laying eggs in a couple weeks and we won't be able to eat their eggs when they start laying, etc... etc... The list goes on and on. It simply is NOT worth it. I'm crossing fingers for you that more will hatch!
