I'm by no means an expert as I just had my first case of disease in my flock but your chickens sound like mine. Mine were diagnosed with Mycroplasma Synoviae. MS can cause the smell as infection has a really bad odor. It is a disease they will carry for life and it needs to be confirmed with a necropsy. Look up your State Poultry Lab. Sometimes they will take your sickest bird and kill it for you to necropsy. I had this all done here in GA for free. While waiting to hear the results the state vet had the remainder of my flock on Duramycin-10 for 7 days at 5 tsp per gallon of water. Withdraw the meds on day 7, wait 3 days and administer again for 7 more. He said it is a safe dose. Cold weather makes it harder to treat illnesses like this just as cold weather is worse on us with sinus trouble and colds. I know it is hard to deal with sick chickens and I wish you the best with them.
