Hi folks
Im wondering how long after stopping a medication like OXY SOL , you guys would wait before eating the chickens eggs. Two weeks? A month? Longer?
Here is our situation....
We had 8 chickens (they are all about 23 weeks, so one is now laying, as of last week...the others aren't mature enough yet- but soon!). They are mixed breeds like Auracanas, Orpingtons, Marans. We have a very large barn that they have all to themselves, and we use straw. Its clean and big and wonderful. They also have access to outside, and free range almost everyday on and off at will. Up until this week I would've said they were very happy healthy chickens.
On Wednesday we found one chicken dead, speculated maybe egg bound....?.... but yesterday another chicken was coughing and shaking her head, so I went and got OXY SOL as per my breeder's recommendation. I separated that chicken and I syringed in some medicated water into her mouth because I did not see her drinking despite removing all liquids earlier in the day so she would be thirsty when presented with medicated water. She is still coughing today, but now one other is coughing and a third was not coming off her roost (even at 830 am! and had one gooey eye) So I've separated them, too, and gave them both more medicated water orally, and left it out for them to drink from. Both the coughing birds are Auracana, (green eggs)and the Maran has the gooey eye. But all 3 are immature and have not started to lay- only our Buff Orpington is laying(and she seems fine still).
Would you guys medicate the whole flock of 7 and toss the eggs for the next while, or wait and medicate one at a time. I cannot find a chicken vet in my area. Dont want dead chickens, but it worries me that the OXY SOL says right on it not to use with layers. How long does it stay in their system.?? Thanks

I think I would medicate the whole flock at once. Does it say on the medication how long you should not eat the eggs for? It would be helpful if it did but it probably doesn't.
I recommend waiting about 2 weeks after they finish taking the antibiotics until you begin to eat the eggs again. I'm sure it is safe to use on layers but the company was just trying to warn you not to eat the eggs while they are taking the medicine.
While you are not eating the eggs you could scramble them up and feed them back to your flock. This is very healthy for them especially while they are sick and gives them more antibiotics through their eggs. It also ensures that all those great eggs don't go to waste.
Hope this helped good luck.

I would wait at least 21 days after completion to use eggs. Do not feed eggs back to chickens after stopping the meds or you will just be prolonging your withdrawal time. Treat only sick birds. These birds must have been carriers of some respiratory disease such as MG or coryza, or wild birds have carried it in. Do they have a foul odor around their beaks? Coryza can smell bad. MG and coryza will remain in your flock until all of these birds are gone. Any new chickens added or hatched to your flock may be carriers. How long have you had them?
