Utah!

They all seemed to have surrived last night. Including the cats that wanted to join them. Thanfully the cats waited until we were out there to show us the weak spots in the construction and we were able to better cat proof it, I just hope they don't find a new way to brake in. I am just going to take it one day at a time. They all roosted in the little hen house with the light and at 730 this morning they were just starting to get up and move around a bit.

They have been living in the barn for the last two weeks or so, I just was running out of room with the pen in the barn without any really way to enlarge the space.

I have 12 chicks, 4 are 4 weeks, 4 are 3 weeks and 4 are 1 week old. I don't want to put them out in the coup at seperate times as I heard they would do best with the adults if the juveniles out numbered them. I just need to find out how to cover my brooder to keep the bigger girls in.

Da*n this weather.

Oh, but wait until August... Chickens handle cold better than heat!

And, it's supposed to get up into the 60's tomorrow

Luckily it doesn't get much hotter than 105 here in August. Usually around 90-100. Our winters are super harsh I worry about it our chickens will be able to handle our -20 cold brrrrr

Does anyone have recommendations for finding chicks/pullets in N Utah? We are getting close to being able to add 5-8 more ladies to our small flock, but I'm nervous about getting birds that are healthy/biosecurity issues, etc. I'd prefer older chicks, if possible. I already have 3 RIRs, 1 Black Star, 1 White Leghorn, would like to find some Barred Rocks, Black Star, Aracauna/Americauna, Australorps, and/or Orpingtons. Any suggestions or recommendations would be appreciated!

thanks!

Hi Kimbobim... It looks like Highland is only about 15 miles from Sandy. If you don't mind coming around the point of the mountain, Christie Brown has a chicken farm on 10600 South and 1200 East in Sandy. A couple of us on BYC bought their chickens from her. So far, so good.

All of her info, including website address are in this post

I've spoken with Christie a couple of times on the phone, but never met her in person. I need to get up there and see what she has available. Unfortunately, this week is our kids' Spring Break (such lovely weather for it today, ppfft), and I have a dear friend's funeral to attend this Thursday. Maybe this weekend I'll make it up there. My anniversary is Friday, so we'll be up there somewhere for dinner. Maybe we could stop by then. I'll have to call her.

I'm just wondering if anyone else has bought chicks from anyone besides Christie. There are lots of ads on KSL.com for older chicks and pullets, but I'm nervous about buying from just anyone on the internet. Other than seeing that their facilites are clean, what do you look for? What questions do you ask?

Is anyone still interested in doing a chickenstock?

thanks!
