well, I had to make the hard decision today to put my little black japanese bantam 'to sleep'. She would make progress, but she was going back downhill again, but still hanging on... I didn't want her to suffer any more. Even if she did make it, I don't think she would have had a quality life, it also would have taken a lot of physical therapy to get her to be able to walk again.
I don't know what happened to her... the day before I noticed her not doing good, she was up and running around, and happy as can be! and then the next day, I noticed she was stumbling forward, and then later that day, she was just laying on her side, nearly dead. I didn't expect her to make it through the night, but she did. I then got her on some electrolytes, and that perked her up a bit, and started feeding boiled egg yolk... and that helped too... but something still just wasn't right.
I did it the most humane way that I could handle, I put her in a butter tub, and sealed her in there with baking soda and vinegar (that was in another cup inside), and she just went to sleep.
I couldn't bear the thought of snipping/breaking her neck, or any other way that I've read... I was in tears. Both my husband and my mom (who lives 1.5 hours away) offered to do it for me (bless their hearts).
Worst part is, I had two little boys that I had to break the news to... they were sad, but my older boy piped up and said "can we go get a new chick? so that makes 7 again?"
Oh, and I called Linden Nursery, they are supposedly getting in silkies tomorrow.
