Utah!

I started with 12 eggs, went into lock down with the 9..not too bad.

Here is a thread showing a beautiful black roo and hen as adults..Ameaucanas.. "the thread"... notice thehttp://www.backyardchickens.com/t/260313/ameraucana-thread-for-posting-pictures-and-discussing-our-birds roo has three rows of comb?

Editing to answer your question right..I'm tired.. you were asking about the wing feathering. I thought you meant the comb.

I don't think wing feathering works on all breeds. Will go look something up on that. :)

Read post 8 here, she's right about the sex links, and pure breeds, I've read that several times. On the expert part? Not me, I've tried it, been right, been wrong.

Lol Cynthia you are too cute! I have never tried that stuff either, looks complicated :p I remember my Grandpa doing it but I was little and did not pay much attention, who knew I develop his fondness of chickens....what I do remember all too well back then was chores chores chores and I was definitely not fond of that as a kid! Hope you were able to get some rest last night. The chicks look beautiful. Looking forward to more news and pics of them :)

Oh the pictures of speckledhens birds or drop dead gorgeous wow!
I wish roosters did not crow, I really would love to have one if it were not for that....hers or just beautiful. Lucky gal!!

Birdguy---I also want to grow these sunflowers this summer, someone had posted that they throw the heads in the run in the late fall and the chickens can pick at them, sounded like good entertainment to me. ( And a good way to save some cash, those things are pricey and growing them would save a bunch) Our yard is 3/4 acre so we have lots of room, I even thought about planting them around the end of the run as landscaping and a little shade toward fall. But I have looked around at seeds and have not seen any labeled "black oil" type. Are the regular ones the same do you know? Or is there a specific kind and where the heck would I find them

When looking you might watch out for the BOSS (black oil sunlower seeds) from Walmart. I have a homeopathic vet and she said Walmart's are coated with something that isn't good for the horses and not for the wild birds either like it claims. I read the label and they (the mfg) does push it off as a "plus" thing, like they are extra special seeds but, again, according to Dr. Henneman she wouldn't ever feed it.

My feed stores aren't coated but they (the seeds) sure have gone up in price. Owner said they have about doubled in 2 years.

I'm with you looking for the seeds with those huge beautiful heads. Someone down the road grows them so I just need to try to find a sunny enough place, and then corral the horses out. We're thinking of building a small hothouse to see if we can grow stuff - otherwise we have too many critters that munch on it. We have a giant rock at the entrance to our place and one year I planted it up all pretty and was so proud of myself. Next morning the potguts (small gophers) had them down to nubs! I love potguts but I was pretty torked at them...haven't grown anything since lol. The hawks take care of population control thank heavens or we'd have hidden mines all over that the horses could hurt themself on.

OMG CYNTHIA I NEEEEEEEEEEEED ONE OF THOSE BABIES!!!!!! A girl please. LOL NEED IT!!! They are so beautiful!!!!

Bird-Man, you've made me decide that i simply MUST grow some Black Oil Sunflowers this year. That would be so fun. I'm 90% sure my winco sells BOSS in bulk. I wonder if they'd sprout, or if they've been coated with something. It wouldn't hurt to buy a small bag and try...

I resurrected my old laptop and made my chick cam go live again (having the camera running really slowed down my computer and made me angry). I figure I'll keep that up until Sunday, when I expect my first pips on my BLRW eggs. Then I'll move the camera to them. I set the eggs at 8pm Sunday, so I figure I'll start getting pips later in the day Sunday. I candled yesterday, and had 5 good eggs still. One had some weird blobs floating around in it, but the chick was moving around. I took a picture, and I think I'll post it on the incubating section, see what people say.

when i buy a big bag at the feed store i just plant some of them. i never buy little packets of them, the better deal would be buying a big bag. at the wild bird store i once told you about in sandy you can buy it by the pound for a good price but it may be too far for you to drive just to get boss. i watch grain prices closely and most grain has gone up a ton but some months it will drop a little so that is when i buy it. i grow it all over my yard because not only is it good for the chickens but its beautiful too. grasshoppers love to hide in them so my girls end up eating a lot of grasshoppers too. they say not to feed the leafs of them but i am not sure if thats true or not. this year i am going to plant pumpkins for the girls in lawn space that is hard to mow, they love pumpkins

I'm in LOVE with the little one up front! Can you be sure to save that one? ::joking!:: She reminds me of my DD when she was 3 and in her first little ballet recital, she left the group and peered over at the edge checking out the musicians in the orchestra pit. That alone got a standing ovation lol! I know you have a lot wanting some. Email me and we can work out the details. Nobody worry -- I'm not going to buy them all! In fact, ya'll will probably beat me there!

Shinx, you can get one, or two..can't know what sex though.
idunno.gif
lol, can you have roosters?

Let's see, three for Elk, two for you Shinx, two for Lisa, and two for me. :) Better chance of getting a girl if you get more than one. Now we need to see who wants to meet me in Orem. And if, someone can do another meeting for all of your northerners up there to pick them up. Lisa, if you are wanting Australorp too, I can hold a couple of lavenders until the Australorp hatch next week. We can meet when you can, you are so far away. I was thinking 7 dollars each for the lavenders. Is that too much? I paid quite a bit for those eggs, but not nearly as much for the Australorp. I am just selling those for 3 each. Let me know what you think. Oh, and I have a few EE eggs ready to hatch with the Australorp, and then, I have the pure black/splash/blue that will hatch on the 16th. They are looking pretty good. More blue eggs from them. The EE's have some green, and one is huge, and a real dark olive green. Man I wish it meant that the chick that came from the egg, would lay that color of an egg.

birdman..I will have to look into the boss. I have planted just the regular sunflowers..the big ones, and when they are done, I just cut down the huge done flower, and let the birds have at the seeds inside. Keeps them busy, picking away. One head of those larger sunflowers will last the girls quite a while, picking at it through the week. And, my girls, love..love, pumpkin! Watermelon too, but I can't get that to grow. :( I love it too.
Right now, my girls get spinach..yes, from the grocery store, for greens when they aren't out and about. Plus, they absolutely love cooked oatmeal. It's so funny to watch them eat that.

I can't believe that I left this one out.. a full face showing the puffy cheeks and the beard..
