I have 5 new babies. Black chicks, and white from the white leghorn..of course. I am hoping that these blacks are OE's. I was soo surprised to see blacks. Where is the blue? Blue Copper Maran dad. Hmmm..I am thinking they will have the red go down the head and neck as I am seeing brown spots on the first one. Surprise here, they are all looking like girls but one so far. I have one more in a white egg working on it..white feathers...yep.
I have more of these same eggs in lock down. Guess I'll get more black chicks from the looks of it. Oh well, DH reminded me that I had said, that I needed a black hen or two out there. Hope I can sell little black chicks, that could be..OE layers. No promises though.
Beautiful!!!! Very fluffy, they look really healthy. I may need to come visit you for chicks next year!I finally got my Bev Davis - Black Copper Marans! I emailed Bev Davis in the spring and as most of you know she doesn't sell anything anymore. She suggested I purchase from Julie Akers. (Anyone know anything about Julie Akers?) I looked up what I could find on her birds and it appears she got them right from Bev Davis and from super dark eggs. I figured if Bev reccomended her she must have good birds. The problem was she had a 3 month waiting list. I tried to get good stock for months but I was clearly too late. I totally forgot about it and I was trying to get hatching eggs right from Bev's stock from another reputable breeder when I got an email from Julie last weekend. "Your next on the list for BCM list, do you want the birds? I can ship them Monday" YES!BTW, Julie Akers was a pleasure to work with and I feel like her prices were fair. Not cheap by any means, but fair.

I really hope they turn out. it's because of the Marans boy you gave me Lisa that I fell in love with the breed. He turned out so nice that now I need some ladies for him. I'm going to try to keep the dark eggs and breed toward SOP. Marans are SO difficult! As you well know.Beautiful!!!! Very fluffy, they look really healthy. He is pretty! My last Blue roo went from gamey/gangly looking at 5 months to huge and round by 7-8 months, I am sure yours will fill in nicely. Mine looks like a barge, he needs a trim down a bit I think hahaI really hope they turn out. it's because of the Marans boy you gave me Lisa that I fell in love with the breed. As you well know.I would be glad to give you a screaming deal and see if we can get more, and better lines in this state. I could probably use your coaching on what to look for and what to line breed for. I have done a lot of research, but I feel like I'm missing a live lesson. I didn't see one Marans in the Davis County Fair.
Here is that boy you sent my way. (he was a little smaller than my RSL and they picked his legs clean and beat up his tail. Now he NEVER get's picked on. He is the lead rooster in my flock.) No halo, correct points, (small s curve on comb), nice long back, I like his tail angle, wide stance, feathers down leg (not shown), eyes are a bit on the dark side, but he has so much going for him. Thank you Lisa!
Getting wider in the trunk!
Hoping he will grow into his chest a bit and fill out. He's still young.

Is it just me or do Blue Copper Marans seem bigger on average than black? I have seen a few monster blue Marans. I just sold a 3 month old blue that had legs as thick as my 5 month old black. They say the genetics are the same, but I swear somthing is going on there. He is pretty! Mine looks like a barge, he needs a trim down a bit I think hahaHe eats like a pig. By 8-9 months they start to look pretty husky. And that crow....wow. Has your gotten the screaming thing yet? Seems like every Marans roo I've had starts this hooting thunderous throat gargling crow, cracks me up. I love that you love him! He came from ladycats and she has nice birds. I can't take credit for this one, he did not hatch from my lines, but had he been a she, things would be different! Hope he makes some nice babies, I would like to get a black or two from you eventually to add back in to my flock to keep the blue nice and dark. My FBCM source in Idaho is not doing FBCM anymore, sad sad day!![]()
