Utah!

Hi all!

Off topic a little bit here...... does anyone here rent? How hard was it to find a place?! We live in Lindon now, and our landlord encouraged us to get the chickens, but I know most landlords aren't like that...... We are going to be moving somewhere up north....eventually. I got a job up there, and hubby is going to school up there so it just makes since to live somewhere up there... (around Salt Lake, but at this point anywhere north of the point would save us gas money lol)

SO yeah.... how difficult was it for you who rent to find a place to rent with the chickens and pups?

Cynthia, I don't trust a call on gender for EE's until they're several months old. At least, not my call. I am pretty hopeful that this white EE is a girl, but we'll see soon enough, I guess. Btw, this little black one is cute, thank you so much. She's having trouble fitting in, so she's in her own little box with a light until she's a bit bigger.

Well, I give up. Lost three more chickens in Tooele, and the problem is, we have no idea where they went. I just found out tonight that two weeks ago, the Marans and both of the BO's disappeared. My boyfriend is working like crazy right now, so he's almost never home, and I am in a position where I can't go out there right now. So far as we know, someone is messing with the animals while no one's home. I just feel sick.

That little black EE doesn't need a light. She's been without a light for a long time. She won't make noise if you don't have a light on her..lol..I'm guessing she's crying for her friend the red sex link. Oh, I hope she's a girl for you! I have felt pretty confident that she is, and now you have me worrying about my White EE mix. Naughty you! I really do think she's a she though.

How are you going to get those chicken thieves? You need a camera like Lisa and Wendy. Catch them in the act. That's sad..sorry. :(

Finally got pictures of Lisa and myself today, after three times meeting it's about time. What a sweet person. Very caring, you can just tell. Will post pictures of us tomorrow.

Sasha, that Polish girl is so pretty! She was fun to watch in the yard. I am going to let her free range with the others, she just followed the other pullets, then the big girls, then the pullets, then me, then the wind came up really hard, and her hairdo was flying around, and my Miss Piggy didn't know what to think of that..so she pecked at it,,I was thinking, oh I hope you don't make a habit of that, but I am pretty sure it was because that top was flying back and forth. I thought for sure we were going to get poured on, but it only sprinkled.
Question, has she been roosting, or sleeping in a nest box. I noticed she didn't balance too well on the little bar in front of the next boxes, but when she hopped into the nest box, she settled right down.
I did another EE treatment on her. If she keeps at those buggies, I will have to do the pillow case job on her. lol..she's going at it like my Ameraucana was, and I finally decided to grease her up. She had a bad case, and the DE just wasn't doing the job. Greased her up, she hadn't laid an egg yet that day, but when she did, that egg was>>>>greasy! :D And so was the other one she was sitting on. Did the trick though. It gets the egg sacs that are just waiting to hatch. It can be a never ending story of mites if you don't get the egg nests/sacs. We will see what happens. Oh, didn't say what kind of greasy I use..just cooking oil, like Wesson.
I got some beautiful pictures of her. My sister is going to love her, she couldn't believe I didn't order any of those ~ orange and black ones. :)
I have an orange and black one now.

She likes to talk! I can just hear that egg song now. I swear, she squatted for me when I went to get her out of the kennel. So I scratched near her back end, and up went her back end. She's close to laying. How fun! Thank you so much!

Hi Cynthia! Yes, Lisa is such a sweetheart, isn't she? Such a doll!
I'm so glad you like Elvis! Are you going to change her name? I know she has to be close to laying, she's plenty old enough. I told Lisa this morning that it would be my luck that she'll lay her first egg for you tomorrow. LOL You'll have to post a picture when she does. :)

She has been sleeping on the roost every night since we got her from Blujems/Slvrphoenix. Our roost is nice and wide, though, it's a 2x4, laying the broad way. I haven't seen her check out the nest box itself, but she's been going in and out of the coop a lot the past week.

Poor girl, when I DE'd her last week, I laid her down and pulled her feathers gently back in sections and powdered her good. I grabbed each one of my chickens and checked them for mites & lice, and she was the only one that had any at all. Is that unusual? When you greased your Ameraucana, did you grease just her vent area? I've got to learn about these things for future reference!

DillyDally-
We own our home, but when we rented with dogs, I posted an ad to Craigslist (like KSL classifieds) and I said "this is who I am, this is my family, these are our dogs" and what we were looking to rent. Of course, we aren't typical animal owners, and we keep show dogs, so that helped. But don't be afraid to put up an ad and blow your own horn, so to speak. Let them know you aren't into hooliganisms (don't think that's a word!) and that you keep good care of your animals and don't let them run amok. We had several people begging us to rent their homes. :) Hope this helps!

I went out and put her on the roost after I wrote that post. She settled right down on it. I also have a nice wide 2x4. She stayed there all night, because when the light came on, I could hear her in there, probably wondering where in the world she was, so I went to the kitchen and looked out the window I could see inside the coop..I've been leaving the coop door open this summer. Anyway, she was still the only one up on the roost, and she was walking back and forth just fine.
No, it isn't unusual for you to only see mites on one bird. Who knows why. When I saw my Ameraucana just going to town on her chest and trying to reach in the back, I did the DE, then checked the others, didn't see any on any of the others but one. But I went ahead and gave them all a treatment. And, went out and put more DE in the coop and all around the run. You just can't keep the bugs away. If people think they have bug free chickens, they can think again..birds..have bugs! That's why I go ahead and do the DE a couple of times a year whether I see any or not. Even the ones that look to be bug free, oh, they are in there somewhere hiding. All we can do is to try and keep them comfortable when they get more than usual. My Amerauacana is finally doing better. She was digging here there and every where. I think I smothered those egg sacs pretty good. She was a sore site to see for a few days, but she looks better 3 days after the oil treatment. Not greasy any more. :D I put the oil all around the bottom area..vent, sides of vent, really good in that area..and then, if you notice when you tip a chicken upside down, there is an area just above the tail that separates. It's a good spot to get, and I put some up along the sides, under the wing, the chest, the back of the neck. When the bugs go to get out of the way, there is not too many places for them to go without getting stuck and drown. lol..I know, sounds terrible...but I just can't bring myself to using the dust that they suggest. Sounds harsh..in fact, I think that DE has to be hard on their skin. If it is on us, what about them? The oil isn't something they like walking around with, but it isn't hurting them. Like I said, she went ahead and laid an egg about a half an hr. after I oiled her. You can give them a bath in a couple of days if they haven't already dust bathed it off.

Good thing I wrote this in the morning, and not at night, someone may have had bug dreams. I did that! After treating my Ameraucana..! I swear, I can't lay down at night, without thinking about my chickens. Wondering what or who or if..this or that or maybe? Chickens!

Posting pictures in another post.

Here we are, at the famous meeting place in Orem..good ol Winco

What a sweetheart. Lisa, you have happy/nice person written all
over your face.

I now have a girl for sure..what a pretty and sweet girl.

This is a dark picture, but had to post it, it was so funny to
see her hair go back, it got so windy while I was out there,
hey, I can see you now!

This is the Ameraucana I was talking about. Looks pretty good
4 days after her treatment. She's a laying machine. I love her
blue eggs. Now if I remember, Polish lay a cream colored, either
on the darker side of cream, or lighter. Sometimes almost white?
Can't wait to see what she lays.

Red, I'm so sorry about your missing chickens. I hope they turn up unscathed. I'd be really upset too.

That polish is so cute! She looks a lot like my Thing 1.

Congrats on the double yolker. Isn't that exciting?

Sundance, are you showing your cats? Hope they do well.

Incubators: How are yours going? I candled mine last night. I have five good ones. I am a little worried about my two pullet eggs- the eggs seem awfully full, and they still have several more days of growth in them.

Kidasoto - I forgot to tell you congrats on your double yolker! That's so cool!

Sphinx, hope your pullet eggs do alright. I would be fretting day and night if I had an incubator. Just one more reason why I don't have one.

Cynthia, this picture totally made me smile this morning. She looks a little startled about being able to see so clearly, doesn't she? I think Polish lay white eggs, but I could be wrong.

And yes, I dearly want a camera now to hide in the yard out there. I have been wanting a game cam for months now, but haven't had the money to go and get one. I have a very bad suspicion that it might have been the neighbors in the back who are kitty corner to my BF's house......they are the ones who would mess with his horses and poisoned his dog a couple of years ago. The lady there told the BF that she'd seen the roo chasing the girls around in her yard, which makes absolutely no sense. Their pitbull is also the one that is supposed to be muzzled at all times, because it has killed smaller animals in neighbor's yards more than once. I'm sorry, but if I ever catch that thing in the yard, I will be paintballing it. Or perhaps something more extreme, if it's going after other animals. Sorry for the rant. I am just absolutely past my limit on loss here.
