Vegetarian?

I decided yesterday morning to become a vegetarian. Everything was going great until we were driving home from an opera performed at Indiana University, Bloomington (long drive), and passed a White Castle (my undoing); had to stop and get a dozen. Had a 17-year-old neighbor girl with us who doesn't eat red meat; that was good because I got to eat her share. So yes, I used to be a vegetarian but only for a day, well, almost a whole day.
Pity!
EDIT: Ooops! I forgot that I had chile yesterday for dinner, and Anne had added meat to that. Make that half a day without meat, but that would be AFTER breakfast, had sausage with my eggs. Luckily, I can't remember what I had for lunch.

OMG! haven't thought of white castle in ages.
where I moved, there are none here. those were the best midget burger..LOL
I remember as a kid Dad stopped in with the 3 of us and ordered like 25 burgers...I thought he was nuts, til I saw the size..HAHAHA

I tried about a year ago, but my dad became very unhappy about the lack of meat on his plate, and they think it is wasteful for me to make my own separate meals. oh well, I'll try again when I live alone.

but about the iron thing, I do eat meat, and have never been anemic, and my parents are still under the impression that I need to take an iron supplement, but I refused.

My wife and I have been eating a traditional diet for the last 3 months or so. I have lost twenty five lbs. Basically I cut out all processed and deep fried foods and 86'd any type of drink with added sugar or even those with lots of natural, concentrated sugars. I drink water, coconut juice and have a juicer, love carrot juice, carrot/apple, etc...

I make all meals at home now. We eat grass fed beef, pastured pork, free range chicken, raw goat's milk (Love!) wild caught fish and organic fruits and vegetables. I've been buying free range chicken eggs fed flax seed, claiming the eggs are high in omega 3 fatty acids but we are soon to purchase some laying hens to harvest our own fresh eggs.

I have tried eating a vegetarian diet before but my body needs protein from flesh foods.

Over twenty years ago I read Diet For A New America by Jon Robbins. This was quite an eye opener to realize factory farming practices even existed. Throughout the years I believed surely, things must have changed but they really haven't all that much in fact in some respects things have grown worse.

What I have learned in the last several months is not only is it important what we eat, but more importantly what we eat, eats, that's most important.

If we could all eat like people did before 1900 diabetes/obesity and many other food related illnesses would not even exist today.

No more searching for the proper way of eating, I have found it, and getting healthier and feeling more alive than I have in fifteen years.

A few books that have really been a wonderful educational experience: Real Food, What To Eat And Why? by Nina Planck, The Omnivore's Dilemma by Michael Pollan and Everything I Want To Do Is Illegal, by Joel Salatin of Polyface Farms Inc. Joel's farming techniques are what we should all aspire to achieve for ecologically sound farming practices where animals are raised healthily and happy.

Note: Vegetarianism is not a diet, it's a lifestyle choice.

Read this: (from: http://www.life123.com/food/vegetarian-vegan/vegetarian/health-benefits-of-being-a-vegetarian.shtml)

"Being a vegetarian is more than just a moral choice to protect animals or to rage against distasteful conditions in farms and the like. There are many health benefits to making the choice to eliminate meat from one’s diet. The benefits of being a vegetarian are numerous and can help a person live a long and full life.

Lower Your Risk of Disease
The vegetarian diet helps to lower the risk of many diseases. One of the major benefits of a vegetarian diet is that those who follow a good vegetarian diet lower their risk for heart disease, cancer (ovarian and breast cancer, among other forms), diabetes and high blood pressure. These health benefits stem from the diet’s typically low-fat and high fiber content.

Lead a Healthier Life
Because vegetarians have to be more conscious about what they consume, they are often healthier eaters because they do more research about the kinds of foods going into their bodies. Thus, vegetarians are more knowledgeable about food and health.

Vegetarians are often a healthier weight than those that follow normal diet plans. They tend to have lower cholesterol levels because they are not consuming as much fat in their diet and have more fiber if they follow a healthy vegetarian diet plan. Vegetarians are often more active and have longer life spans because of this healthy weight. Additionally, the vegetarian diet helps to protect against obesity not only for the individual, but for his or her family, because they will have healthier food options in their household.

Improve Your Complexion
Vegetarians can also improve their skin complexion based on their food choices. The food in their diet is rich in water and antioxidants (plants are rich in antioxidants and vitamins). Because most vegetarian diets are full of fiber, vegetarians can also have a more effective digestive system.

Though there are many health benefits to being a vegetarian, it’s still important to note that any diet can be unhealthy if it includes too many fatty snacks or fried goods. Even vegetarians need to make healthy food decisions."

I know folks who won't eat meat because they say they love animals.
