Venting about Roosters

I don't think that some people have a plan b if they have a Cockerel because they trust breeders and hatcheries, but they really shouldn't. Humans are very faulty and make mistakes, that means that they can make mistakes during vent sexing.

Some people impulse by with chicks then don't even know what they're going to do with them once they're grown. Some people buy hatching eggs or chicks and don't even have a coop or brooder yet, I guess I'm just overly prepared.

It's hard for me to understand how people can buy an animal and not have the proper housing for it or not have actual knowledge on the animal they just bought.

I find it very hard to read about people breaking laws in order to keep a chicken. It's those types of people that ruin it for others, that's why some places have bans on chickens because there was somebody that couldn't follow the rules.

I agree with you on all those points. I'm just saying that the majority of people are not like that. Thankfully, I haven't seen too many threads on here about people breaking laws to keep chickens, or not having any knowledge of the animal that they just bought. But I have seen a few threads on it, and I do roll my eyes when that happens. But I think those people are definitely the minority.

I'm glad someone made this thread, if you can't have a rooster why have it? You're literally taking away what roosters were made for, or just use it for meat. I'd rather kill the animal then watch it suffer with a collar on it's neck and eventually let it choke itself.
Yes! This is how I feel. I'm unsure why we are seeing a lot of threads that have to do with changing roosters to be something they are not. It's been the past week or so and it honestly makes me feel bad for these roosters. I'd rather someone use them for the dinner table than torture them with man-made devices.

Yeah, I'm glad they're the minority!

It would be nice if more people asked questions, yes indeed it would.
I however have met people who thought straight run ment just that, chickens that don't do doughnuts.
Iv'e also come in contact with the mindset of why does the store sell something I can't have.
So questions do have their limits just as answers have theirs.
Patient educators are worth their weight in gold, really and truly.:)
I wish people would research more... It takes 5 seconds to ask an employee/seller what straight run means. I bought straight run my first time and go to 3 cockerels out of 15 chicks.

Roosters aren't for people who get scared easily. Roosters respect those who show no fear and some respect no one. When people come over and want to hold my roosters, I ask them if they feel like a trip to the ER. My roosters aren't part of petting zoo :gig

I have helped many people understand things about chickens, but there are some that don't listen and learn their lesson the hard way. I hope no one thinks straight run means they run straight, but I guess there are some that may think that.

I have seen a lot of threads about people wanting to neuter a rooster because they're not allowed to have them or wanting to change a rooster from being a rooster so that they can keep them... I guess I want to vent today

There are a lot of concerns about chicks hatching out of eggs when you have a rooster. I have two roosters and I have never had a chick hatch without me knowing. The only way you can get a chick out of an egg is if you incubate it or allow a broody to sit on it! There has to be perfect conditions for a chick to grow in an egg.

Why are people getting straight runs when they know that they could get cockerels, but don't have a plan to get rid of them? Why aren't people buying point of lay pullets (POL) or hens if they are not allowed roosters/cockerels?

Neutering a rooster/cockerel or trying to make a rooster not a rooster (using collars or other means) will never work and can injure them! If you are not allowed to have a rooster/cockerel nothing will change the fact that it's a rooster/cockerel!

If you do not have a plan to get rid of cockerels, don't buy them! If you cannot rehome them, eat them, or find a solution... DONT BUY THEM!

Don't buy an animal and try to change what that animal is because it will never work! You cannot buy a dog and convince it that it's a cat! You cannot disguise a dog as a cat! You cannot raise a rooster/cockerel and make it think that it's a hen! You cannot disguise a rooster/cockerel as a hen, it will always be a rooster/cockerel! Roosters/Cockerels will always have some sort of aggressiveness, sexual behaviors, spurs, ect... You cannot change that! If you do not like how a rooster/cockerel is, do not own one or have potential to get one!

People who keep animals that they are not supposed to ruin it for others!
I agree. Don’t buy straight run, get breeds that are difficult to sex until maturity and don’t hatch eggs if you can’t have roosters. Frankly I don’t understand why people can have hens but not roosters, my hens make way more noise during the day than my 3 roosters.

My barred rock is the loudest of my flock, she can out cluck any rooster crow. She is obnoxious, but lays amazing eggs. I think that the people who make these laws about no roosters don't understand that hens make just as much noise! They probably have never even owned chickens.
