Glad Spork was saved.
My only dog bite though came from a dachshund, a rescue one at that. Combine a normally skittish dog breed with a history of abuse, and it is a perfect storm. I knew to be careful around him, move slow and be gentle. The owners, good friends, asked me to walk him after school since they don't get home from work until late evening. Poor doggy needed to pee and get a leg stretch. Anyway, I rounded a corner with him and there was a neighborhood dog, a golden, known for being vicious to other dogs. It made a beeline for the doxy, full on charge with a most intimidating growl. I scooped the doxy up into my arms and he sank his teeth into my hand, and I kicked the golden in the stomach as he jumped up on me to attack the doxy. Golden retreated, and I carried the doxy home.
The bite was my fault, I pretty much knew he would be terrified and bite. But I would rather have gotten bitten by the doxy then have to explain a mauled dog to the owners, you know? I never did tell them he bit me, and just treated the wound myself. No infection, just small scars. He was up to date on his vaccinations, so it wasn't an issue.
